What's new

Actual or imagined shaving-prompted pilgrimages - what's yours?

Apparently, winter has decided it wants to establish permanence in my part of the world this year. I've been trying to force spring with some Dominica Bay Rum, which isn't working.

It has, however, prompted me to read up some on this excellent product's country of origin, Dominica, which has taught me two things I didn't know about it, principally: 1) it's not the Dominican Republic and 2) the accent goes on the third syllable, not the second, as in "doh-mi-NEE-kah."

It looks like a magnificent place to visit, and I would this instant were it not for the usual things that prevent a guy from flying off to places like Dominica this instant. But perhaps one day.

What about you? Ever taken a cue from some shaving thing for travel, or wanted to?

Good topic.

The St James's area of London is a Jerusalem for any gentleman. I try to look into the shops whenever I can get to London. The UK high street also has Palmolive sticks, which are a worthy destination for any pilgrim.

I have been into the Nancy Boy shop in San Francisco a couple of times. Oh, and I almost forgot that visit to the West Coast Shaving shrine shop in southern California.

İstanbul, or Turkey in general, is something of a paradise for shavers. The barber shops are ubiquitous and offer shaves. It is fairly easy to find street hawkers selling razors, brushes, blades, soaps, and creams - or step into a drugstore. It helps if you enjoy Arko, Russian blades, boar brushes, and lemon cologne.

On my list: despite knowing Chicago and New York well, I have not yet had an opportunity to venture into Merz or Pasteur.

I'd like to make a roadtrip to France.

List of points of interest:
- Martin de Candre artisan soapers in Fontevraud-l'Abbaye
- Savonnerie du Bon Berger soapers in Giat
- The Monastry of Notre Dame du Calvaire in Gramat where the nuns make their Eau d'Emeraude aftershave
- Visit a Marseille Soap factory in the Provence
- Plisson factory in Plerin (don't know if they do tours)
- Planète Rasoir shop in Paris
- Perhaps a few perfume houses...

Now I just have to work in some other non-shaving items to convince SWMBO this will be a fun trip...

The London shave shops would be on my list if the opportunity presented itself.
A trip to Sheffield to visit the Edwin Jagger facility would also be in order.
They have gotten the largest share of my shaving purchases over the years.

London - obviously just to see and shop at - T&H, Trumpers, Taylors, DRH and others.
Isle of Man - visit Vulfix
Italy - SMN
Germany - 4711, Farina (origin of colognes)
Turkey - to get a Turkish shave
