A Wonderful Vintage Brush Scuttle Combo

So this guy walks into my shop yesterday giving me a rash about long hair, short hair professional blah blah and of coarse I just laughed at him and said" sure pal".

Anyway, he hands me this absolutely gorgeous vintage Rooney Brush and Scuttle Set cradled in it's own Satin lined case. After some research and the help of the artist mark I found out this set was made at Sandland Pottery in London back in 1945. It is a Porcelain set and the brush is made of best badger. Both the scuttle and brush are hand painted with a band of 24ct gold leaf.
The colors of the "Fox Hunt" painting are incredible. Such a wonderful gift.

Thank you Neil and the Mrs. I will treasure this fine piece for a lifetime. You folks are simply wonderful. What a grand afternoon we shared.

hmmm... I bet you smoked cigars, too!

I have been looking on ebay at scuttles of this type (though none as beautiful). How are these meant to be used? Most seem to have holes in the bottom of the upper cup; obviously a drain of some sort. Were these upper cups meant to hold soap, or simply a brush warmer? Any info appreciate.

I'm pretty sure that the upper cup was meant to hold soap, and the holes allow excess water to drain through to the lower chamber.

I had a similar design many years ago, in plain white. I think I got it from C&E, and used it intermittently for about 5 years, until it fell off the sink and broke. I've been looking for something like it for many years, but can't find one at a reasonable price.

Thank you! Looking at them on ebay it seems that the upper cup doesn't descend far enough to pick up much heat from hot water underneath them in the pitcher part. Am concluding then that these would not be a good candidate for a bursh scuttle.

many shaving soaps have a curved base to fit the scuttle top you warm your brush in the hot water in the bottom and load the brush from the soap on the top. these were used in victorian times and into somewhat modern times when people only lived in cold water flats and heated the shaving water in a tea kettle and poured it into the scuttle.

I see what you did there Ray.... haha.

it looks awesome. Are you going to give it a go? or in the glass class for viewing?
