A Salute to Ogallala

There's a wide variety of bay rums out there, but you have to stand in awe of a supplier who not only makes an amazing product line, but really does some heavy lifting in the customer service arena.

I'm a Pinaud bay rum fan. Splash, walk out the door and all day I get the sly grins from the ladies in the office who wanna know what the scent is and where they can get some for their husband or boyfriend. The wife has become delightfully demanding since I became a bay rum guy, and I don't have to constantly smell the usual fragrances of the modern age, with their sugar, vanilla and marine plants aromas.

Still, Bay Rum can be a bit heavy in the summer, so I decided to give the much-lauded Ogallala Bay Rum Co. a try. I was curious about the Lime and Peppercorns Bay Rum, a recommended summer scent, but I figured I'd go ahead and get the sampler. Bay Rum and Sandalwood sounded a little rich but interesting.
I also liked the idea of a bay rum deodorant, and Ogallala offers one.

Well, the deodorant and the sampler bottles arrived, and with them was a thank you from John, the owner, and free stuff - a bottle of bay rum air freshener and a bar of bay rum bath soap.

There's a new line of bay rum products in this house from now on. Pinaud will always have a place in my den, but Ogallala owns the rest. The wife went nuts for it, I love the scents, the deodorant shows no signs of irritation...

and I feel like John would be honored to have my custom. His product sold me, but his attention to a potential customer sealed the deal.

If you like bay rums and you haven't tried Ogallala, give it a try. You may not care for the regular stuff, or the limes & peppercorn. You may only want the deodorant or the soaps. It doesn't matter, because you'll be treated with a respect and an honesty you rarely see anymore.

John earned this posting.

Here is another happy customer. I ordered the sampler pack of the shaving soap. 5 different scents/combinations and they all produce the best, most protective coating of any of the 15 or so soaps/creams I have tried. When the samples got worn down some, I melted them all together in one container and I think I like this the best! If I had to pick one soap, this would be it.

Unfortunately I'm an unhappy customer.
The service was great, samples were stellar, the aftershave woah, interstellar. I want more! The first and IMHO the best aftershave I've ever used, just the standard bay rum but I could feel it working disinfecting, sealing and all that good stuff. And the smell! I could happily strap opened bottles of this stuff under my nose all day, every day. Yum!

So why am I unhappy? Darling Wife can't stand it. Says I stink out the house when I use it. Gives me dirty looks. Threatens to divorce me (only joking about the last one but you get the idea) The only way I can use it is to put it on when I'm outside heading to the car for work which kind of defeats the purpose of Aftershave Sob,Sob poor me. So I don't use it anymore, it has been relegated to a dark and forgotten corner of my bathroom. But I know it's there.........waiting............:frown:

HAHAHAHHAHA

Poor YOU!

To help your Darling Wife come to her senses re: OBR, getcherself a bottle of Pinaud Lilac Vegetal - splash a little of THAT on...!

DW'll be begging you to haul out the OBR.

Guaranteed.

Incidentally - I am a devoted OBR customer - love the full range of OBR product... I even have the OBR jeroboam - fantastic stuff, great seller, just GREAT is all.

Absolutely, Ogallala products and John are fabulous. I do tend to like their straight up bay rums products more than the mixed "flavors" in whatever form, but I know that some folks seem to really love the Lemon Peppercorn and Sandalwood versions. Have not tired the deodorant or the shave soap yet, but as I have mentioned elsewhere on this forum, I am completely addicted to the bath soap, which I also have been using as a shampoo. Feels great, smells great, makes the room smell great, The air freshner is wonderful, too.

I do like the smell of the Pinaud more. So who is to say one cannot use both. The OBR AS is quite lightly scented. Very soothing though. I assume more pure bay tree oil that the other versions of Ogallala. The regular cologne starts to have more aroma, and to me much more clove and cinnamon, which is perfectly appropriate in a classic bay rum. The special reserve double strength is a little too much on the cloves and cinnamon, to me. But used judiciously is fine and has way more staying power than any other BR I have tried.

I also like the "usual fragrances of the modern age, with their sugar, vanilla and marine plants aromas." OBR is not just for the ultra traditionalist at all. It is very accessible stuff in my opinion.

Mad props to OBR and to Spatterdash for such a great post.

Even if I didn't like his products, a part of me would want to buy some just to support his excellent customer service, something that seems to be lacking in this day and age.

Luckily for me, his Limes and Peppercorns rocks. It is my girlfriend's favorite, and she keeps asking me why I'm not using it if I try something else.

There really is something for everybody in his line. The funny thing is how different they all are. I expected more similarity, but if you're going to try Ogallala, try the sampler and try them all.

The products are great, and the company is just as great!

OBR is outstanding -- both the products and the service. I absolutely love the Bay Rum and Sandalwood AS.

Og is the ONLY bayrum I like. I'm a particular fan of the limes-peppercorn and at one time or another have tried the entire line. In fact the only ones I don't care for are the sandalwood splash (I don't like sandalwood period) and the lemongrass shave soap (skin reaction). Needless to say.. the products and service are top notch.

I wear this one often.... In fact, I just picked up an 8 oz bottle (and asked if he'd consider making a BR L&P cologne in addition of the aftershave). Whenever I put it on and crawl in bed my wife rolls over to tell me I smell "yummy"............

Unlike the regular bay rum which they have in AS, cologne, and special reserve cologne versions, I thought Ogallala pitched the lime and peppercorn as an all in one AS/cologne. see http://www.usfreeads.com/catalogs/363692/item860326.html

The L&P certainly has more scent than the standard Ogallala BR AS, which is fine by me. It depends on what one is using what for.

For that matter, I am not seeing the sandalwood on the Ogallala web site anymore, except as one of the set of 5 for $15.95.

That's correct that it is marketed as both the AS/cologne but it still does not have the long lasting scentitude (my made up word for the day) as the standard and special reserve cologne. Still, it does last longer than the BR Aftershave.

John has quite a few products that are not on the web site. I asked about some and he sent me a sheet listing everything. There is a BR, Coffee and Hazelnut line that he offers as well.

Just shoot him and email and he's got a catalog.

Good idea. I have exchanged a lot of e-mail with him over time and I never thought to ask. The lemongrass stuff sounded really good. I do not know why I seem to be the only one around not blown away by the lime and peppercorn. Has to be a flaw in me. I generally love Ogallala stuff.
