A Good Slick Cream

Howdy!

I am looking for a good slick cream to use. I have a very coarse bread and use a Merker 34C with Wilkinson blades from Walmart. I have the following creams:

Art of Shaving Lavender

Razorock Tabacco and Tea Tree

Razorock Boston Tea Party ( I bought this and only used once and would love to PIF it if anyone would like it please let me know)

Proraso Green (original)

What creams can you recommend?

Also I am having a hard time getting a good smooth shave. I start off by showering then wet my face with warm water afterwards then apply either AOS Lemon Gel or AOS Sandalwood Aftershave Balm since I don't have any preshave oil. Then I use a brush and mug to generate lather. Next, I do a WTG pass then re wet my face, ATG pass and re wet my face, then diagonal from ear to jawline then the opposite way. The ATG pass. Then whatever I miss I follow up with an electric razor a Wahl 4000 with a Super Close head. Then treat with either cheap Witch Hazel or alcohol to stop bleeding. Wash with cold water then put on some original Polo (green bottle) colonge.

I am really sorry this is a double dipping questions but I really really would like some help on both a cream and technique help etc.

Best,
Jerry

I would recommend Spencer & Devon, made right there in Texas. No other cream I've tried seems to provide the same amount of slickness. It's a less common brand, but really great stuff.

Creams, I've just had a tube of T&H West Indian Limes and it's gives a very effective cushion and I reckon it's a slick cream. As for your set up, Have you thought about a blade sampler pack? and /or possibly a soap? If your shaves aint smooth enough it's either technique, blades or both.

I'd get a blade sampler and some proper pre shave oil. There's plenty around. Some B&B'er use plain old olive oil. As for soap I found that ColConk Almond is cheap and very slick. Check the BST as there's soaps, creams, blaeds oil etc always for sale.

yeah TOBS, Taylor of Old Bond Street , makes some excellent creams that are great but hold on. I recommend a soap as it lasts longer. like D.R. Harris. triple milled english soap, lasts forever. moisturizes very well.
Also a blade sampler pack. you need something like cyrstals (israelis), gillette black or blue, feather blades, (many more)
pre-shave oil- do not use the balm, that's for after you shave. make your own. watch this video.
this brazilian guy gives a great reference point. you can use whatever essential oils you want. Try lavender and jojoba to smoothen the beard.

my brother has a heavy beard and now uses this mixture.

So your routine is:

Aftershave balm
WTG
ATG
Re-wet
Diagonal ear to jaw
Diagonal jaw to ear
ATG again
60hz lawnmower
Alcohol or witch hazel
Cold water shock
More alcohol in the form of cologne

Good lord man, you actually have skin left over after all that? On a daily basis? I think your biggest obstacle to a smooth shave is all this torture your skin is having to endure. You just need fewer passes and fewer chemical treatments. It's hard to say what will work for you, but I think it's easier to see what doesn't work.

Slickest I have found is Trumpers coconut oil cream

I was thinking of getting some of this. Does it have a good Coconut scent or is it more subtle? I also with GFT made the spanish leather scent in a tub, all I can seem to find is a small tube.

Not much scent, it is the coconut oil that makes this cream stand out as a top performer.

Seconded. Great stuff, and comes in a big tub so it's not quite as expensive as it seems at first glance.

I also suggest Proraso Red (sandalwood and shea butter). Very slick, and feels pretty nice on the face.

yeah I'd second D.R.Harris again.
I could always take that Cream off your hands if not interested.
If you're doing a PIF count me in.
Definitely give the preshave oil recipe a try. or you could splurge on proraso pre-shave cream. not necessary in my opinion. with a good preshave oil you can save money and it'll last forever. But again, I cannot recommend soaps highly enough for slickness. CReams, IMHO, do better in conditioning but less for slickness but a few have proved me wrong. I just like soaps.

There are a lot of variables here. You have some good products listed, the RR artisan line being slick and protective.

I get better results with soaps.

Change blades. What have you tried? I can send you a couple of my favorites to try. Pm me.

Slickest cream for me is Acca Kappa in the tub ... if it is still available. Slicker than deer guts on a door knob.

Just to add my 2 cents I have a couple in the RR line and nothing is as slick as XXX which you can't get anymore however Acqua de Parma is the same formula. Slick, not oily, lathers like nothing else I have tried faster than anything I have tried also. That includes other RR's and just about all the TOBS, Edwin Jagger/Muhle soaps. I got a sample pack of all of the TOBS, they are all the same just different scents. Fine product but not slick like XXX and ADP, a noticable step down. I am waiting on some Dr Harris stuff - based on others that my be some really good stuff. But Acqua di Parma and XXX are exceptional and slick. ADP is $65.00 RR was $9.00.
