A couple of questions on the use balsa.

Can all powders, pastes etc be used on balsa, or only certain ones, and do you apply these straight to balsa, or is there and preparation of the balsa involved first.

I use 0.5 Chrome Oxide powder. I mix it with a few drops of oil, I think I used Neatsfoot oil, but mineral oil is also recommended. Until its a fairly thin but spreadable paint type consistancy. Then swipe a few lines across the strop and spread with your hand (use a disposable glove) repeat if necessary until you have a the whole thing covered. Only a very light coat though dont drown it in the stuff just enough to turn it green.
I also gave the balsa a quick lap with W/D sandpaper first probably 200-300 grit and then dusted off with a paint brush before applying the ChromeOx.
