What's new

'58 Fat Boy + Astra SP = Wunderbar!

Just had a wonderful shave with my recently acquired first year Fat boy. What a razor! Fantastic. First pass on 5 with an Astra SP and second pass on 6. Great shave, great feeling. The fat boy's weight feels just right. This razor will be competing for first place along with my '73 super adjustable black beauty, short handle.

I think my first DE, my edwin jagger will soon start gathering dust as the vintage Gillettes take over the shave den. When I'm not shaving with a Dovo straight, the Gillettes rule the roost.

The fat boy pairs very well with proraso white.

Gotta love those overweight shavers....

Amen! If the shaft was just a little longer, for me the fat boy would be the perfect razor.

That sounds great, I can't wait to try an adjustable. My Edwin Jagger is collecting dust since I acquired a vintage Gillette.

I need to find a nice long handle black beauty (around '73) and a slim L4, to complete my little family.

TGilly: you'll love it!

To think my Fat Boy is 55 years old !!! Gillette really nailed it. It's the Volkswagen Beatle of razors :)

Larzone: Great minds think alike :)

This has been my favorite combination for about a year. :thumbup1: I haven't purchased a razor since 2011, and I'm not sure I will ever have any reason to do so.

I wish I had seen this thread before I shaved today. I loaded up a Gillette "spoiler" in a '54 Super Speed (40's-style). I also have a '58 Fatboy and Astra SP is one of my go to blades. I will have to go FB+Astra this week.

You won't regret it.

Now all you need is a Slim, and you may well indeed never touch that EJ again!

Oh I got a slim ok. I nailed it today. My birth quarter too. L 4 and very nice looking. I may have paid $10 too much, but I don't care. Gillette adjustables kick booty. Don't know when, but I will get my hands on a long black beauty too. I've got a short black beauty in great condition and I love it. It's what turned me on to gillette adjustables.

If money were no object, I would be prowling around for a toggle, and what I consider to be the gillette holy grail, the bottom dial. I'm not just a DE man though. I also use, hone and restore straights, and all that costs money too. I think though, if I had the cash to take down any auction on eBay and get NOS fat boys, aristocrats, gold toggles and bottom dials any time I like, the fun would right out of it.
