$50 Brush Budget - Open to Any and All Input!

I've been wetshaving for a while now and am anxious to upgrade from my junk Walmart brush. As with most college students, I'm on a budget and would hope to spend no more than $50. That said, I'd love to hear everyone's suggestions. Pictures or links would be greatly appreciated. If you're recommending a brush you use, I'd love to hear about your experiences with it.

Also, I have a C&E and AOS store in my area, anything I should go check out there? Thanks!

Man, I'm crazy about boar. With a $50 limit, you'll be able to get 2 nice ones: the Boreal 976 (which I've just ordered myself), and a Semogue 2000 (which I hope ot order in the future).

Apologies, I should have specified, I'm hoping to pick up a Badger brush. Thank you guys all the same for the suggestions.

What could I expect to pay for a Rooney?

The Rooney's a can't miss brush, but with shipping, you're heading north of $80. If your budget is pretty firm, consider QED's Select line of brushes. The most expensive, a 24mm silvertip, is something like $60, and you can get a very nice best or smaller silvertip for close to $50, if my memory serves. The price list is on the board, so just search here for some info on them. I recently picked up the 24mm in best from a gent here, and I'm truly impressed. While I haven't tried every brush out there, the QED best hair is the softest best I've used.

Any one of them but I recommend the Medium, I have the Imitation Horn.

This is the same brush as the well known and loved Crabtree & Eveyln BBB but easier to find and marked Edwin Jagger as opposed to being a private label C&E brush. Buying direct from EJ also gives you the choice of the horn, which I like.

This is my everyday brush and works beautifully. I haven't yet caught myself wanting a new brush, this one just does the job as well as I will ever need. 50 bucks should cover the brush, shipping, as well as one of their simple brush stands.

This is the brush I use every day. The Kent BK2 is an outstanding brush and is within your price range. High quality for a very reasonable price.

Keep an eye on the B/S/T forum. I recently scored a good used Savile Row silvertip brush for $50 shipped. That brush sells for around $80 new.

Here is my opinion: do not skimp on brushes. $50 is a lot of money, but if you spend $75 you could get one of the best brushes out there: a Rooney 1/1. $75 is not a lot for a brush, especially a Rooney.

Just received a Penworks brush yesterday. You will not be disappointed in the craftsmanship.

My daily brush is a Penworks 22mm in Finest Badger hair. It's an excellent brush for a great value. A similar brush in a brand name would cost way more.

Having not used a name brand high end brush, I can't imagine that it would perform that much better than my Penworks Brush; or perform 2x times better to warn paying double for it. :tongue_sm

This is the same (and only) brush I have, with the imitation horn, which looks really good. I have been very happy. They run about $35 shipped from the UK, after the conversion from pounds sterling to USD, minus the VAT, and with the shipping - pretty good value.

The penworks 20mm with the Jade handle looks pretty sweet. If I were to do it over I would consider this as an alternative. I honestly don't see the need for multiple brushes, however. It is definitely a little more unique. Maybe I will choose this when I gift my father a new brush...
