Found myself in possession of some 2k-3k grit sandpaper. Is there any real advantage to using sandpaper this fine for lapping stones? Thinking like Jnat, Arkansas Black, maybe BBW among probably others….
I usually lap with a 400x plate. Never found lapping finer to do anything for me, and I did find that sometimes it works against me. Historically, Jnats have their surfaces corrected with Nagura, to expose fresh cutting surfaces. They're not polished, that would be going the opposite direction. I found polishing Arks to be the same. BBW and Cotis get lapped to about 325-400x then worked with a slurry stone for a minute if there were any visible marks left over. Usually not needed though.
