1st Shave With An Astra SP Today

Well, since the one time 2 years ago in my sample kit.

Really super smooth and cut effortlessly. I expected nothing less in my Muhle R89, but I was impressed with how sharp it was in addition to smooth. I nicked myself in one spot, and that was my fault ATG on my chin. Even blade buffing and extra cleanup didn't dredge up any irritation. I still had some residual irritation from my less than stellar shave with my Slim Adjustable, but the Astra did not aggravate that. My neck was a bit red where the irritation was, but after some aftershave balm and 15 minutes, the redness was gone. It will still take the rest of the week for my face to fully heal from the Slim shave. I think most of the other blades I have would have aggravated the irritation a bit.

So, all in all, even though the Astra may not be considered to be the sharpest blade out there, it is more than sharp enough to cut almost any beard, and mine is thick and coarse, and smooth enough not to irritate even the most sensitive skin. I have been enamored with the Gillette Blue and more recently with the super sharp and smooth Israeli Peraonna, but I honestly don't know why I'd ever shave with anything else when the results are this good. Not that I won't shave with my other razors again, but this was a great shave.

I'll have to see how they do in my vintage razors, which I'm struggling with. Maybe the Astra will be the blade that makes them daily shavers for me. Way to go Astra. Next time I need to order something from Amazon, I'm going to order another 100, maybe 200, for $9.50/100. Just so I have plenty laid in reserve.....in case something happens to production or the factory blows up, God forbid.

A+ rating for Astra SP.

Astra blades are good ones to keep around.

I'm always pleasantly surprised when I unwrap one.

They are the blade I will usually grab when I get a new razor as I know what to expect out of them

I am glad you had such a terrific experience with the Astra, I shaved with my first last night and you are right about the irritation, hardly any but not as close or smooth as a feather with my DE89L but great for a normal workday shave.

Astra SP are an excellent value blade. I will always have some on hand.

However, if you like the Israeli Personnas, you would be remiss if you did not try the Personna Labs. I find them even sharper and smoother than the IP, not to mention less expensive, easier to find and made in the gold ole' USA.

As a noob I bought 100 Astra SPs at the start of my DE shaving just over a month ago based on the almost universal praise they get. Last time I used one 2 weeks ago I ended up with a faceburger. Since then I've used Feathers and 7 o'Clock yellows and got good, close and fairly comfortable shaves with hardly a drop of blood lost. I may try the Astra again tonight and see how it goes.

The Astra SP is in my top 3 and in regular rotation. Whenever I acquire a razor, my first shave is always with an Astra. The consistency and smoothness slows me to judge the razor.

I've been using Feather for about a year without any other blades swapped in. Recently I got a chance to try a pack of Astra SP, and I loved it. I order a 100ct carton on Amazon, and I don't regret it at all. They're an even tie with Feather for me.

Other than a few sample blades I have neither used nor given away, Astra SP's are the only blades I use.

I have a newbie question on blades. This probably doesn't apply to me since I have a light beard and the Feather and Derby didn't feel that much difference to me (only two I've tried so far.) Other than sharpness, what makes blades so different for users? For example, everyone seems to think that Feathers and Astras are fairly close in sharpness but as one of the posters above mentioned, the Astras tore him up and the Feathers were smooth. Could bevel or type of finish be a more significant factor?

For a long time I tried Astra Superior Stainless again and, for me, they seem to be sharper than Astra Platinum. But they only last for 4 shaves.

I loaded up an Astra SP last night. This time I lathered up with some Truefitt & Hill No.10 shaving cream. What a difference! A real good shave with only 1 small weeper. A little more razor burn than a Feather but nothing too bad. Maybe that 100 pack isn't destined for a PIF after all :) The only conclusion I can draw is that my lather building skills have improved and that the SP is perhaps less forgiving of a poor lather than other blades.

"Smooth" epitomizes Astra Superior Platinums. And sharp enough to cut through the thick stuff. After I spend a week or two using other blades, then try a Astra SP, I think "wow, why use anything else."

Astra Stainless is not a great blade for me, however.

It's really a great blade. After I finished a pack I went on with other blades in my sampler. Now that I went back to my second pack I can see that they really stand out. I find them sharp enought, smooth, last a long time (5-6 shaves for me) and dead cheap. For the price of 100 of these I think they will be my first 100 buy, still have to try some IP reds and 7 oclock yellows but the price is no where close to astras.

A kind member PIF'd me a couple....I THINK they're the labs. I'm going to confirm that and then try them. I do like to buy made in the US products whenever I can, and whenever the quality is acceptable. Everyone really seems to rave about them. The IP's I got on Amazon for less than $20 for 120 blades, so I was pretty happy with that. I'll have to look up the labs as well.

Me too! I like Astra's, a little on the milder side, but a couple extra blade buffs are of small consolation for no weepers & a nice smooth shave.

I seem to be one of the few who don't like Astra SP blades. But they are definitely inexpensive, and if you happen to like them, they are an excellent buy.
