1967 Slim Adjustable (Is this a replate?

This 1967 Slim Adjustable was in a lot of 6 Razors I picked up for about $42 for the entire lot. It was gunked up (wish I had before photos) along with the rest of the razors. Since there are so few scratches, the finish is almost matte, and there isn't much paint left in the numbers, I am thinking it must be a replate. Am I correct? Regardless, it is my birth year razor, I love it and wouldn't give it up. The mug was a second hand store find.

There was a barely functional Super Adjustable 109 also in the lot that cleaned up very nicely into a decent functional razor. I have listed it on e-Bay, but should have put it here on the "Shaving Mall."

Don't think so.

I've seen this a few times on some older razors. It's a light pitting/erosion that is relatively uniform on some surfaces. Couldn't tell you the environmental conditions it takes to cause this... just know I've seen it before :biggrin1:

The fact that there's at least a little paint remaining on the numbers tells me that it's not a replate. Polish it up (if you haven't already) and see what it looks like. The underside looks decent. Good luck with it.

Interesting! I find the lack of scratches to be indicative of a lack of use, but your environmental conditions statement seems to have merit. Is it possible that it left the factory this way or were all of the razors that left the factory more polished?

You will note that this is my first post. I am about a week into my new hobby, but love soaking in the information.

I've a Tech like that. It surely didn't leave the factory like that, because I can just barely make out the acid washed Gillette diamond on the head. There'd be no need to go through the extra step if the head was supposed to be matte like that.

I think it's unlikely to have left the factory in that way as the Gillette quality control in my opinion appears to have been quite good. We rarely see razors with inherent manufacturing defects likely as a direct result of this QC.

That said, I do think it's plausible to have been bought and used little or not at all and then put into long term storage where the conditions that create this effect were just right. I do believe this is long term process - not a quick change. Just my semi-educated guess :)

I would guess that it was cleaned at some point with something pretty harsh. Or was scrubbed with something like an sos pad.

The Super Adjustable is a great razor, I hope you have one...or you will be kicking yourself for not keeping it :)
