What's new

1924 Gillette new standard before and after

using a nother members method of hot soak in boiled water with dish soap, I couldnt resist. until i started using it a month ago, it hadnt been cleaned in prob close to 50 yrs, as it was my great grandfathers and found in a drawer at my dads place. This razor has rekindled a zeal for life. :tongue_sm

some soap scum from 50yrs ago, some green "patina"

SO after using it a couple dozen times and falling in love, i gave her a little cleaning. pics!

Nice work. These are a classy razor that give close smooth shaves every time. Even better that it's been in your family for generations. Enjoy.

im really enjoying it, eager to give it a comparison to my 40s SS that is on its way in the mail. I hear the SS is less aggressive..still at a loss to what that really means.. guess i will know soon. :thumbup1:

Good job... I always like reading posts about folks getting razors that are cruddy in appearance and than transformed into gleaming beauties.

You are very lucky to have a razor this nice that came from a family member. I really like the open comb razors, and that's a great looking handle.

Good job getting it cleaned up. Gold razors are tougher to clean up because you dont' want to damage them, but I bet you can get this a bit more polished up if you try.

Enjoy!

I have one just like that that I won in a PIF. It is one of my favorite DEs. It would be even cooler if it was a family razor. :thumbup1:

That cleaned up nicely, and it looks like your GGF took good care of it.

That's so cool to be using his razor.

Great job! I am waiting on a Tuckaway I ordered off the bay. I wasn't sure of the safest way to clean a gold plated razor. This sure looks like the way to start. I've used it on nickel razors but I'm not sure if Scrubbing Bubbles is safe with the gold razors.

Scrubbing Bubbles won't harm the gold itself, but the solvents in the spray could compromise any lacquer coating, leading to gold loss later on through wear.

The baking soda and foil trick should take care of the patina, too.

Baking soda and foil trick only works on silver plated items and is the result of a chemical reaction with the tarnished metal. Gold does not tarnish, therefore does not react to that method.

The green patina noted is tarnish from the underlying brass, and is the result of plating loss at that point. It can be cleaned and polished, but you will probably remove more plating in the process.

I have had the best results cleaning gold razors using a solution of dish soap, very hot water, and an ultrasonic cleaner. Buffing with a clean, soft cloth afterward will bring out a nice shine.

Congrats on preserving an heirloom! Enjoy!!
