100th post : Double Ring review and PIF

Good evening all,

It was suggested that my 100th post be a review of my recent, most fortunate, find (Thanks Alex, I wasn't watching my post count). Some may have read that I found this beauty over the weekend. I cleaned it up yesterday and shaved with it this evening.

The set up was as follows:

Razor: 1905 Gillette Double Ring
Brush: Whipped Dog silvertip
Soap: Arko and C.O. Bigelow superlather
Blade: Astra SP
Aftershave: Pinaud Clubman

I often shave in the evening as it allows for more time and attention to detail and a more relaxing experience. I have been at this double edge shaving process for a few months now. It is becoming second nature. Tonight was a little different. I was was both excited and a little nervous. It excited me to be able to actually use an example of the mother of all DEs. Let me say that I was not disappointed. I face lather almost exclusively and paid particular attention to getting a very well created lather in place. That done, I loaded a fresh Astra SP into the Double Ring. Careful attention was paid to blade alignment. That being completed, the shave began. Careful strokes with the grain to start. I have a New Standard, so I know how sensitive these early razors can be in regards to angle and pressure. Let it be known that the Double Ring is no different. With proper attention and care, it will shave like a dream. I actually felt like I was in one. This razor is 107 years old, its provenance is unknown to me, but I can only imagine its travels. How lucky to be a part of its journey. Three careful passes and a little touch up. The results? Wonderful. Very smooth results, not completely BBS perhaps, but certainly DFS+. A splash of Clubman raised a hint of good tingly heat. AAAHHHH!!! A little old school AS warms my heart. I love Clubman, it seemed the only appropriate scent for this shave.

I'm hooked. I have other razors that I really enjoy. The Double Ring is surely one that will stay right at or near the top. I got into this style of shaving to prevent ingrown hairs. Who could have imagined where that would lead? A hobby that is really, really enjoyable to me. Thanks to all the members of B&B from whom I have learned so much!!

With that done, on to the PIF. I started wet shaving a while ago with a brush and a Mach III. Six months or so ago, I started searching for a DE. I found one, then two, then.... Well, we all know where that leads. I enjoy the hunt for the tools of this hobby and I can make the time to do some searching and finding of said tools. I have been very fortunate and it is definitely time to make my first PIF. This PIF will get someone started. The basics will be covered, it will be up to the winner to fight off the ensuing ADs. I would like the PIF to go to someone new to the wet shaving world. They don't necessarily need to be barren of supplies, but please don't get in if you are much beyond the very basics. Also, this will need to be CONUS only. Please respond "Count me in" in this thread. The PIF list will close at 6pm central time Friday and the winner will be chosen at random. I ask that the winner please review the items received. Good Luck in winning (and even more luck fighting off the many ADs in your future).

Please note the PIF will NOT include the Double Ring.... :001_smile:001_smile:001_smile:001_smile

kudos to you on the great find. love the use of Clubman!

NOT in for the PIF but great nonetheless

Please do NOT count me in, but great PIF. I'm a straight razor shaver but man, I was drooling over that double-ring when you posted it yesterday...YOU DOG! Sheesh, what a find.

Great find & tale. One of my favorite things about vintage razors (or anything else really) is pondering their travels. I hope they are as interesting as I make them. Please do NOT count me in.

That's very generous. I was lucky enough to recieve a similar PIF when I began just recently so I know that it will be appreciated. I'm NOT in but thanks for helping out the next guy.

Ollie4ISU,

I'm not in, certainly so given my recent RADs and resulting acquisitions. However I just wanted to say that it was a great find, a great shave, a great writeup and a great PIF! Keep it up!

The PIF is closed. The winner is : slinky18

Thanks to all that participated.

I meant to do this on Friday as my package arrived on Thursday but my son got sick so I am just now getting to this. Thank you so much to Ollie4ISU! I am always amazed at the generosity of the members on this board.

Thanks again to Ollie4ISU, the only thing that could have made this better would have been a couple of aftershaves and a brush. (Not being a jerk, Ollie will understand)
