$100 Brush options

Hey guys, time for me to get a serious brush :w00t: I've been wetshaving for about 3 months and the time flies by. I'm finishing up my 2nd year of medical school and my granny gave me some cash for a nice brush. I'm looking for something in the $100 range, could be more if it is truly worth it.

I'm looking for this to be my last brush for a while. I'm more of a user than a collector.

I have a Semogue 1305 that I'm putting up for sale soon because it just doesn't hold enough lather for 3 passes and I hate having to re-facelather soap mid way.

I've been eying the Rooney 3/1 in faux horn, are there any other comparable all-around brushes for the price range? Maybe a Simpsons offering?

Thanks for any help!

Those were my famous last words!!

For around $100... I've heard the Simpsons Duke 3 is a fine choice and is many people's favorites. If youre big into soaps, perhaps a Chubby 1 in Best. Rooney supers are nice too!

I've had my eye on Savile Row at some point, so that may be where I go for my next one.

Thanks for the wonderful suggestions that came in so quickly.

They have raised a few questions, it would be great if somebody with both brushes can answer. How does a Rooney 3/1 stack up against the Saville Row?

Also, I noticed the Duke 3 has Best hair quality...I figured I would go silvertip given the price range. Is this a noticeable difference with the higher end brushes?

Oh and also...while the Saville Row handle isn't much of a looker, that knot is just beautiful!

I'm not a Simpson's expert, but some actually prefer the Best to the Super (3-band). And in some cases is a very good grade - since its all relative. Not sure how the Simpsons Best compares to Rooney Super, but I would say that the Simpsons Best is better than say other labels' Best (i.e. Edwin Jagger).

Check out some of the other SR handles... I think the knots are the same in the different handles, so look around:

I've found my Simpson Special in best to be as soft as my Shavemac in silvertip.

I find the best hair for Simpson an excellent grade of hair. I like it more than 3-band Super. There's many excellent choices that can be made from.

Plenty of great choices to look from at your price point. Any thing additional that you would like in your new brush? Would you like a denser or less dense brush, one with less or more backbone, color preferences, any info added helps to narrow down some choices. Simpson, Rooney, Savile Row, Shavemac, Semogue, and Vie-long are ones that come to mind for me.

Anybody know the model shavemac shown in this video?

That thing is a beauty!

I believe this is the brush you were seeing here.

It's from a few years ago so I don't know if they make the same handle or if it's real horn. I'm running too low on energy for confirmation. :wink2:

The bristle used for that brush definitely isn't the same as a short time after it Shavemac changed it. Hope that helps and good luck on your brush quest! :thumbup1:

The current badger brush I have is the VDH badger. It's a lot better than the boar brushes I've tried but its a bit on the floppy side and the hairs are really prickly (I find this to be quite annoying since I face lather).

I haven't really developed solid preferences as of yet due to my limited experience, but I would assume a nice soft dense brush would be right up my alley. I face lather soaps and creams. I rarely use a bowl. A decent backbone is a must.

As for color preference, I prefer either a nice faux horn or marble colored handle, but this is not an essential factor.

I've been on the Shavemac site for the past couple of minutes checking out their 23mm silvertips...they're looking quite nice!

Thanks for your post!

The Kent BK4 seems extremely floppy based on reviews, which is not something I would like for face lathering.

How about the Simpsons 2 band Persian Jar? How does that stack up with the Rooney 3/1?

Wait about a month longer and see if Phil at bullgoose gets more Simfix Grosvenors in. I absolutely love mine - favorite brush by far.
