02/20 International Pipe Smoking Day

My local store is having an event but I'm not sure I'm going to stop by, ill certainly be busting out the green Pete with something extra nice to put into it

I'm thinking I may actually pack 2 or 3 different pipes and sip from each one for a few minutes, then trade off to a different one, and so on for the evening.

Today, I packed my briefcase with a tin of MacBaren HH ODF and a tin of Blakeneys Best Bayou Sliced to help get me through the work day. After work, there is a special meeting of the Vancouver Pipe Club, for which I have secured a tin of Balkan Sobranie No. 10 (Gallaghers); while the club has secured some McCranies Red Flake from '83, and a blend of dark-fired Burley, air-cured Indian leaf and some Lakeland Va from Steve Fallon.

Very nice. I wish there was a local club here I could get involved with.

I wish there was a decent pipe shop I could go to.

I am lucky in the aspect of having a really good B&M shop here with a pretty huge selection of pipes, accessories, and bulk tobacco. They don't have a ton of the tinned stuff, but I'll take it compared to having nothing local.

Fridays are Fishtastic!
I had two bowls of Squadron Leader before work. I may have a couple clay bowls of the same at work. I think I will have some SG Navy Flake when I get home.

At the moment I'm puffing on some ribbon cut bulk house brand called Mild Burley from a Dallas B&M, loaded in a rusticated Savinelli Tevere.

Later I may try to keep some rubbed-out 1792 going...I haven't had much luck keeping that lit as of yet.

Gawith tobacco are pretty moist. When I had some 1792 I air dried it for 30-35 minutes before packing.

Thanks for the heads up, Derrick! I had no clue it was a holiday! Not sure on which pipe yet, but it will definitely be loaded with HOTW.

"Can't Raise an Eyebrow"
I had great plans to open up a new tin or break in a new pipe, but in the end I smoked some Carter Hall in my fathers old Kaywoodie 188. I did how ever print out "A Pipeman's Handbook" and put it in a binder for easy reference.

Tried that...let some rubbed-out air dry for 1-1 1/2 hours. Still had problems.

Put a flake out and let dry for an hour or so and did the fold and stuff, then sprinkled some rubbed loose on top...still had problems.

Been on some pipe specific forums and have seen the advise for this problem, along with posts from people that are new to it and having trouble...followed the advise and I still have problems with flake at this time.

I know it's me, but I've tried packing looser, firmer, poking with the pipe tool...etc. still not working well for me yet.

That sounds like an excellent idea. I think I'll put some 1792 in Dad's old pipe that I did the salt and everclear thing to last summer and see how it goes. I think he bought that pipe at a five and dime in the 50s or 60s, but the pipe was pretty rank so I know he smoked it some but all I remember him smoking was cigs. before he went to Red Man because Mom ragged him about smoking...and that was in the 60s. Now that I think about it I do remember him smoking a pipe a bit on occasion.

After lunch smoke was a house blend from a local tobacconist in my SMS meerschaum. Right now its SG Medium Virginia Flake in a Peterson System Standard 301.

Losantiville in the Savinelli and pulled the trigger on the Peterson SPD '13 billiard. Got a couple cobs to put in my tackle boxes too. Fishing and the pipe go together. Right?

Well, I rubbed out some dried 1792 flake more than usual and put it in Dad's old pipe.

Worked MUCH better.

Tried it in the Savinelli and actually got a decent smoke out of it. Got such a good vitamin N hit that it made my tummy roll a bit.

Now if I could just master the fold and stuff.

International pipe smoking day has turned out to be a good day.
