Vanillin can do that to a brush.

I wonder if certain batches of badger hair is just more prone to discoloration than others

Perhaps. Or maybe a bad batch. I tried the shampoo, will use it again this week and see if it makes any difference.

Good to know, but I've never used a vanilla type soap personally.

I’ve heard about vanilla staining natural brushes. It’s possible that some of the soaps you have may have vanilla in them without you realizing it. It could be one of many things or a combination of things that’s causing that particular brush to discolor

Nope, no vanilla. Like I said, only have a handful of soaps I use, and nothing my other brushes haven't seen.

Oddly my Chubby is the only one yellowing in my lot. I'm not a soap nut, I have a handful of soaps, and certainly none that only the Chubby has seen. Here's the lineup, it's somewhat noticeable.
