I've been wet shaving since 2001, but haven't really experimented much with the expensive soaps and such. Initially, DE/WS was a way to save some money. I switched over from a Gillette Sensor and Barbasol and started wetshaving with a Merkur 34C HD and a Burt Bees shaving brush and mug. I don't miss that brush or mug, but with those first tools I started to enjoy shaving instead of seeing it as an arduous task.
I've used several common drugstore soaps, some nicer English and German stuff, and soaps from Classic Shaving and Em's Place. I prefer soaps to creams and alum, witchhazel or alcohol-based aftershaves. While I prefer Old Spice, Bay Rum or Lavender, my wife likes me smelling like a piña colada or Drakkar it seems.
