Introduction
Marketed as a "medicated" face wash and skin care product since the early 1900s, Noxzema[1][2] face cream can also be used as a pre-shave and a shaving cream. Later, in the 1950s, the company (later named Noxell, Inc.) began producing a dedicated shave cream. The company was purchased by Proctor & Gamble in 1989, and the American Noxema brand was sold to Alberto-Culver in 2008; Proctor & Gamble retains the brand in Europe.

Noxzema as Pre-Shave and Shave Cream
Pre-Shave Cream
There are comparisons between Noxzema and Proraso Pre-shave cream. Both behave similarly. Noxzema face cream can also give more body to shaving lather. Noxzema may improve shave soap or cream performance in hard water.
One Method of Using Noxzema as a pre-shave cream
- Identify the sections you're going to apply the cream. If you're going for a full shave then it would be something like this: left cheek, left jawline, mustache-chin, throat, right cheek, right jawline. This helps to apply the cream in a more uniform way.
- Grab an FTU[3] per section and apply it on each one of them. Once you have applied it, spread it over each section and try to acquire a uniform layer of cream over your face.
- Let it rest while you start to build your lather. Load the shaving brush on the soap. Move the brush from the mug to the face or mug once you see something like this.
- Build the lather. Building the lather on the hand or bowl will probably improve results because the cream will have more time to rest on the face. Avoid lengthy delays, however: build lather at your normal speed.

Noxzema Face Cream as a Shave Cream
Although this face cream can be used as a shaving cream, it is fairly thick and tends to "gunk up" (or clog) the spaces between razor heads and blades. If you're using a cartridge razor then this will represent a problem and using a DE only minimizes the effect. The shave is not impossible but due to the closed nature of this safety razors, the clogging is somewhat an expected issue. Now if you use a SE or a Straight then this won't be a problem at all.
One thing to note is that it may be diluted with some warm water prior to application as a shaving cream.
