What's new

YOWCH! I won't do THAT again!

Got my new toiletry bag the other day. Loaded it up, except I didn't put in a tube of Bigelow or what have you, I figured I didn't really want a wet shaving brush in the thing.

This morning, I shaved, using the can of "Gillette Series Shave Gel" -- for sensitive skin, and my DE with a Feather blade.

IT FELT LIKE SOMEBODY WAS PEELING MY FACE LIKE A GRAPE!

Like I said, I won't do THAT again! Now to go find a BIG pill bottle to keep my brush in...

that'll teach ya! maybe you need to get a travel brush for christmas to go with the kit. also you could put a puck of soap in the kit instead of cream if you wish.

Actually, I'm thinking a tube of shaving cream, face-lathered, will mean I don't have to carry a mug, thus one less WET item in there. The only way I know how to use a puck of soap involves a mug.

I leave my brush at home when I travel. Some creams advertise themselves a brushless, but actually, they ALL are. You can lather up any soap or cream by hand, and neither your whiskers nor your razor will know the difference.

For the better part of a year, I was even hand-lathering at home ... it saves time both on the prep end of the shave, and the clean-up.

Next time, take that tube of Bigelow along, or even a chunk of soap in a zip-lock baggy.

I've had good success keeping Van der Hagen soap in the inner plastic container it comes in. It closes fairly securely and it's easy enough to dry off and throw in a travel bag.

I understand the gel... I started this bit around April, kept my gel. I wet shaved for a bit with the gels than tried some new stuff. The gel quickly got shelved for the good stuff...

About 2 monthes later I grab a can of goo and throw it in my kit for a quick vacation and on the road tried to shave. It was all crap... Wife was mad caused I dragged her around for a day trying to find some decent stuff to lather my face!

Recently moved and found 4 cans of Edge Gel and gave them to my Bro In Law and he acted like I was giving him gold!!! I have tried to give him soaps and creams to no avail. To each his own!

I recommend TBS Maca Root SC or TRSC Sensitive SC as you can brush or finger lather them. I just got an Arko stick and its great but I haven't tried the finger lather yet!

Seriously you need to get some palmolive shave sticks! I learned how to face lather with em and it is pretty awesome. I even use it at home every now and again. The stick fits perfectly into one of the smaller pill bottles and yes, get one of the large pill bottles for your brush. I need to poke some holes in teh bottom of mine so it can breathe a little after I am done using it. If you think you need a cup or bowl of sorts I stole one of my son's plastic feeding bowls (he's 17 months we used em when he was smaller) the diameter is slightly larger than a mug and maybe half as tall. I think these are it.

OK youse guys! I'll try the Bigelow (because I got a HUGE amount on special at B&BW) without a brush and see what happens. I have a VDH brush that I no longer use, having bought a brush from local guy Randy Pratt, of Superior Brushes. I can try the VDH brush for on the road if hand-lathering doesn't do the trick.

Bigelow will finger lather but it won't be the same as with a brush. Remember its thirsty, use about the same amount as with a brush and smooth it really thin on a wet face. Get your hands really wet and just rub it as fast as you can with your fingers kinda lightly. After a minute or two it will start to fluff. And the whole process works better in the shower & with a day or twos growth IMO. Have fun!

Btw- The Maca Root & Real Shave Co stuff finger lather way easier than Bigelow IMO.

I bring a Body SHop Synthetic brush any time I travel.

FWIW, I HATE using "brush" creams brushless. Proraso without a brush is like eggs without heat. not worth it.

fwiw, Gillette sensitive shaving gel was the last can of goop I bought before I moved back to proper lathering. It was incredibly horrid even compared to the other cans of goop that I normally used. I think sensitive refers to how it will leave your skin feeling after the shave.

For the brush I travel with I tie it into a piece of PVC pipe. I checked the cutoffs in the garage for a piece that would hold my brush neatly, measured for overall length of the brush and measured the location of a low spot in the handle. I cut the pipe to length, then cut a notch about halfway through the pipe at the low spot location. I cleaned up the pipe up from all the cutting burrs using a file and sandpaper. I use a cord to hold the brush in the tube by tying it through the notch. The ends are open to allow drying.

Since it is SCH40 pipe, I bet I could drive over it and not hurt my brush. I drive a Cavilier, not a tanker truck.

Cost: free + about 15 minutes using a hand saw, file and sandpaper.

Pictures! I have more pictures, but this is the best of the final item.

Yes, it is a VDH boar brush. I like it, even though it is not my daily brush.
