WSP Monarch and Prince

I thought I'd post up my thoughts on these two brushes.

In order to gauge the scale of the scale of them I have started by picturing them alongside a Rooney 3/1.

Starting with the Prince

As you may already know, I'm a bit of a fan of the WSP Stubby (extra-firm), so I thought I'd compare the two together to start with:

Two things immediately struck me as noticeable; the knot in the Prince is denser than the knot in the Stubby, and the handles are noticeably different (as can be seen from the photo).

As I bowl-latherer, I thought I'd put the Prince to the test first. Here's the result using some Vulfix cream:

Gobs of thick creamy lather were what I ended up with. The result is certainly better than the Stubby (which is an excellent bowl-latherer in itself). This is, I think, down to the lack of the glue bump in the knot (which shortens the effective knot length of the Stubby).

The new handle, whilst not up there with the best turned handles, is an improvement over the handle on the Stubby as well in that it is far less slippery-when-wet compared to the handle of the Stubby.

The Prince has nice, soft bristles and was a joy to use when the lather was painted on my face, with no scritchiness evident.

All-in-all I would say that Prince is a definite improvement over the Stubby and is definitely a keeper for me.

Moving on to the Monarch.

I've photographed it next to a Kent BLK4 for comparison, as the brush is in the style of the Kent with slight differences between the two handles:

So, the question is, how well does this brush bowl lather some Vulfix cream?

Here's the answer:

The knot on this brush is seriously nice.

It's very soft, with no hint of scritch, and has far more backbone than I thought it would have.

I could have sworn that I was using a Simpsons Best or Super knot when it was being used on my face - it felt that good.

Here's the after shots of the two brushes:

Conclusion

Overall, I would say that these brushes represent excellent value for money.

The handles are not up there with the likes of Simpsons, Rooney and Morris & Forndran but then the brushes are significantly cheaper (even with the added Customs charges if you are importing them into the UK).

They are, though, certainly on a par with handles produced by Kent and Edwin Jagger for example.

I rate the hair used in the Monarch as being up there with the Simpsons Super and Best, as well as the Rooney, M&F and Kent Silvertip knots.

If anything, it felt as luxurious as my BLK12 whilst having the backbone of a Rooney 3/1.

The hair in the Prince doesn't feel as good as the hair in Monarch but does come very close to it.

It's a very nice knot in itself and would certainly score highly in terms of a price performance ratio.

So, in conclusion, I would say that both the Monarch and Prince appear to be great brushes and have certainly made me think twice about brushes made in China as they are worlds apart from some of the other offerings I have seen produced there.

I just purchased a WSP Prince Silvertip (BST) and it is a very good brush for me. I find it equal to or better than Rooney Style 1 Size 1 (Small) - Faux Horn - "Super" Silvertip.
Nice Review. Thanks. I will not hesitate to purchase another WSP brush
!

As I posted on the other forum, thank you for the great review. I love the pictures, especially the one's next to the Kent as to compare the handles side by side. Theses brushes are very special indeed, the two and three band Monarch's are the one's I have experience with and are impeccable.

You won't regret it. A really top tier Chinese made brush (designed right here in the US by a fellow wetshaver) at a phenominal price. I own several brushes that are worth $100's of dollars and these fit right in with those brushes. Lee (not Sabini) really knows what he is doing with the design and production of these brushes, he loves brushes as much as we do and it shows in his work.

I have both the Prince Finest and the Monarch Super Silvertip. While both are very good the Monarch takes the cake for me. Looking to trade my Prince and a new tub of SMN for another Monarch

I am testing a prototype brush for Lee. It is identical in size to a Rooney or M & F 2XL and actually weighs a couple of grams more than my 2XL.

Lee told me that he thinks this brush will measure up to any brush on the market with no excuses - even a Manchurian. So far, I am very encouraged. Initially, l thought it felt a bit scratchy when dry (as does a Manchurian), but it felt excellent in use - soft tips, with good density and backbone. I even had a sense of that nice scrub you get with Simpson 2-banders and Manchurians.

Is it a match for a Manchurian? Well, I'll need to use it several more times to decide, but regardless, I like the brush a lot. Lee has come up with a very good brush which seems to have the potential to get even better with a few more uses.

If it wasnt for this thread I would have never known about the WSP brushes. Im intrigued on how well they are.

Has anyone else bought either of these brushes?

I have one coming, hopefully tomorrow. On another forum, Lee admitted that the "super silvertip" of the Monach is High Mountain White, and that the brush prices are going to have to go up precipitously if he's going to keep the same type of hair (note: he's honoring the current prices).

There is lots of marketing going on regarding these brushes. I have both 2 Bands. They are good brushes with very soft tips... For the price a great alternative to name brands...

I just bought one. I was unaware it was HMW grade badger hair. I cannot afford a Plisson but this is a great alternative.

I'll report my opinion of the brush after receipt and using it.

I am actually very excited to get this brush in.

What is the delivery time on the Free Domestic Shipping that WSP offers?

This is a quirky comment. The brand making this brush sounds new so they'd obviously have to do some marketing to let people know of their product. I don't get what you mean by bringing this up.

They are looking intriguing though. I'll wait for a few more reviews before I decide on one. I love the shot next to the Kent brush. Can I have both please? :biggrin1:

I had both of mine ship the same day I ordered them (different days). I ordered the Prince just before Thanksgiving and received it the day after the holiday

I made sure Lee understood that I was gonna call 'em like I see 'em. I am flattered to be a tester, but I'm nobody's shill.

My comment was targeted at the way the brushes are talked up on another forum.
