World cup draw

The draw for the world cup has just taken place. England, America, Algeria and Slovenia are all in the same group. Only two teams can move onto the next round and any of the first three are capable.

That is about as good a draw for the United States as the team could hope for. England is one of the lower ranked top teams in pod 1 with only South Africa being an easier opponent. In Pod 3, only Ghana and Paraguay would have been better draws based on FIFA rankings. In pod 4, only Slovakia would have been a better draw.

Having been "flat headed" in past draws, this one is nice to see. If the United States can win the group, they would play the likes of Germany (6), Serbia (20), Australia (21), or Ghana (37). I would pencil in Germany for winning that group with ease. That means the US would play Serbia, Australia, or Ghana (one of the easiest 2nd round draws any team could have). That said, if England wins group play, the US is going to have to play Germany and that spells trouble.

Overall, the United States has as good a chance to reach the semi-finals or even finals in a long long time.

In the UK the bookies have England 3rd favourites to win the world cup, behind Brazil and Spain.

The USA is 9:2 to win their group, England are 1:3 (huge favourites).

I just wish Scotland could be there to show you all how the game should be played.::blush:

Superb user name by the way. You obviously know a great football team when you see one.:thumbup1:

Hi Angus,

You're probably right about Germany. If they get through, they will get better and better. But they are in the poule of death though. As a Dutchman I'm not unhappy with Denmark, Japan and Cameroon.

And as Cruifff once said: You might as well have difficult opponents right away. If you want to become world champion you will have to beat them anyway.

The good thing for the Dutch is that the other teams will all take points off each other. I enjoy watching the Dutch style of football, it makes a good spectacle for a neutral, but they usually underachieve when it gets to the business end of a tournament.

No group of death this time for the US. We're pleased as heck even if we have to face England in our opener. Hopefully, we can do as well as the last time we played in South Africa (that choke against Brazil still stings but we played a great game against a great team).

Australia has a task on it's hands with Germany in our group. If you want to win, you need to play the best.

My money is on Scotland as usual !!!!!

We shall overcome

we shall overcome

we shall overcome some daaaaaaaaaay

oh oh deep in my heart

I do believe

we shall overcome some day !!!!!!

LoL .... you have to Laugh

Oh and by the way I`m backing any team that beats Englandshire !!

The funny thing is I had no idea it was every four years . I spent a Saturday watching a soccer tournament on TV with friends last year, which I assumed was this. I suppose that's a testament to the average American's interest in soccer...

That was probably the FIFA Confederations Cup, a relatively recent competition now held as a kind of rehearsal for the World Cup. The USA did well in that and will be looking for a similar performance next summer.

When I read the title, world cup draw, I assumed you were referring to a world cup game that ended in a 0-0 tie. Don't they all?
