Witch hazel before TOBS a/s?

I recently switched to TOBS St. James a/s and was wondering since it doesn't have witch hazel in it should I use some witch hazel prior to putting on the a/s?

I always use witch hazel prior to using an aftershave. Even if a given aftershave contains witch hazel, it's in a far reduced concentration, so I would still use both products anyway. :tongue_sm

It probably won't hurt and if anything just add to you post shave treatment and take a little sting out of any after shave splash that you might use.

Hi,

I always use witch hazel before the aftershave; I apply the witch hazel, clean & strop razor, faff about a bit, then apply the aftershave.

Have fun !

Best regards

'is it better to apply the witch hazel to a wet or dry face?'

I pat my face with a towel after final cold water rinse, then liberally apply the witch hazel.

However, I wouldn't think it would make any difference if your face was wet though :001_smile

Have fun !

+1. When I finish my shave, I rinse with hot water, then cold. Pat dry. Then some Dickinson witch hazel. I let my face air-dry after that, then go to AS ... read that regime somewhere. Anyway, by the time I clean up the shave area, I'm ready for the AS and EDT ...

Isn't the point of witch hazel to be a pain killer?

Not a pain killer, but an astringent. It tightens up the skin, and closes up any small nicks or weepers (usually). The same effect can be had from an alum block used either before or instead of witch hazel.

BTW, Denim, welcome to B&B, and boy did you bring back memories for me: I went to both Hampshire College and UMASS/Amherst way back in the 70's, and lived for a while in Northampton. I'll bet the shadbush is in bloom on the Connecticut River and it's getting close to asparagus season up there...Mmmmmm...

Same here. I also read about this post-shave routine around here, and have stuck with it.
