Sentimental Winter in The Haberdashery
full

As the days grow longer and the air grows colder, its time for many of us to go and unpack all the thicker winter clothes that has been in the back of the closet or packed up under the bed. The pea coats, the beanies, the scarfs, the sweaters, are all welcomed during this time of year.

As you sort through and dig up all your winter clothes, what is that one article of clothing or winter accessory that makes you pause for a second because of a fond memory? A scarf from a loved one? A winter hat or beanie you received as a gift from your children many moons ago? Tell us your story of a fond memory attached to a winters haberdashery item.

Okay, I'm going to sign up for this PIF.

My sentimental winter clothing item is an overcoat I inherited (not in the "somebody had to die first" sense, though ...) from my father. It's made of Harris Tweed, and he wore it back in the 60s when he went to university, and when I went to university a few decades later, he passed it on to me. The lining is all shot ... I've had to do a lot of sewing on it to keep it together sort of, and really I should take it to a real tailor for a new lining ... but it got me through university in great style, and it's one coat I always love to wear.

Kind of like this ...

I'm in. My favorite sentimental winter item is my Grandfathers old scarf. It went to countless Nebraska Football games and to court for 50 years, he practiced until he died at age 87. Every time I put it on I remember my special times with him.

I'm in. My favorite sentimental winter item is a beanie that my Uncle bought for me in London. He was in London for a few years and when I was quite young he brought it back and gave it to me. I have kept it ever since then and wear it from time to time.

I'm in. My most important piece of my wardrobe is my grandfather's American flag lapel pin. He wore it in the 60s, 70s, and 80s as an executive for Exxon and every time I pin it to my suits it reminds me of him. Today would have been his 89th birthday and there were so very many lessons he taught me that helped to shape who I am today.

Had a terrible ice storm knock out all power for 10 days several years back. The family and I camped out in the living room. Cooking and staying warm was done with the fireplace. Brutally cold, windy winter conditions. I kept that fireplace humming, going in and out fetching & cutting logs for the fire. All done in this coat.

Favourite sentimental winter item is my tweed detail flat cap which my now wife, then girlfriend bought me when we visited Camden, London. I'm certainly not the flat cap generation, being 32, but it pairs well with a shirt, tie & jumper for smarter events, as well as t-shirt & jeans for watching United play down the local sports bar. I'm originally from the UK, but do not live there anymore so it definitely has an Englishman abroad feel to it and draws some attention (in a good way I hope). Being a headshaver it's also great for taking the edge off those -22 nights!

Almost forgot - I'm in, thanks for the PIF

It's not very glamorous, but I have an over-sized bomber jacket that my dad wore that I dedicate to my winter chores. He's been gone for 13 years now; I look forward to every snowfall and X-mas decoration put-up/take-down and wood-splitting/stacking/fire-building task because I get to wear something that was his...

Imagine this not in youth size...

I have a pair of 100% wool gloves that my dad had when I was far too young to fit in them...now they fit me perfectly. He passed away when I was 15.

They stay in my car year round, and I've used them to wear, wipe off the window, clean up my kids, and they have been put through every weather condition, every "off label" use I can think of. Slap 'em on your boot and let 'em dry, they're good as new. Amazing pair of gloves.

I'm very glad to have a pair of matching mittens, too. Thanks, Dad

Personally I'm not a huge watch guy, but I do wear one daily. I only have 2 watches, and both were given to me by my father. One of them is an omega speedmaster with a blue face that my gf wears, and the other is a breitling navitmer with a black face. The omega was given to me I graduated college. The breitling was originally my dad's watch that he wore for about 10+ years until he gave it to me a little over a year ago for my 30th bday. To me it is one of those watches that I plan on wearing for as long as it lasts, and even hand down to my kids if i ever have any.

Great watches, your Dad is a man of great taste.

Was rummaging through the closet two weeks ago and found an old wool scarf given by a long ago girlfriend to pair with a denim jacket. I have no idea where she is now, but it certainly caused me to pause and wonder how she might be doing.

I'm in as well. My fave is my L.L. Bean Peacoat. It was a gift from my wife only a few years back, but it's so classic and well-made that it became an icon in my coat closet. It's been out a few times already this year, but the ol' boy really excels in January/February, when the Plains can get mighty chilly. In fact, I just picked up a nice Irish wool scarf today to go with it. Ahhh...I do like the winter.

I don't know if this qualifies(I only recently learned what a haberdashery is:blushing: ), but if it does, I'm in. Aside from my Carhartt coat, the only outerwear I don in the winter is a very light, tan windbreaker jacket that my father gave me. To most, this hardly seems like winter attire, but here in Arizona, there are many winter days where a windbreaker is sufficient. This jacket is sentimental to me because it is the same jacket that my father let me use on a fishing trip when I was about 8 years old.

It was late February, the heat in the truck was broken and it unexpectedly started to rain. Dad's window roller was broken so his window kept falling down. My dad saw me shivering, took of his jacket for me to wear, and drove for about an hour getting soaked and freezing his butt off. I don't know that I will ever be able to get rid of this thing.

Include me please, thanks!

Hang with me. My favorite winter item I've been looking forward to wearing since it started getting cooler here in Texas. It's a simple scarf from Old Navy but it was a Christmas gift last year from my now ex-girlfriend. It excited me so because it's close enough to the Colquhoun clan tartan and I told her that's all I wanted last year. She got me other things anyway. What's bittersweet about it is...after six years of dating (please no flame, I'm about to do it myself) she broke up with me three weeks ago. We have been through everything together, her CF and a double lung transplant, her house burning down, my father finding out he had cancer in 2010, and my grandfather who I was living with and taking care of (though he was healthy right up until the end) until two weeks after Labor Day when he passed. She gave me the trite lines of "it's not you, it's me" and that I didn't do anything wrong, but I did. I didn't work hard enough to at the very least to propose to her. I'm still in college, most of it being paid by me, as I go but I could have acquired a second job to at least start to save up but I didn't. I started looking for a part time job yesterday. There are a lot of things I did wrong but I'm not mad at her. I don't blame her. I need to man up. I love her to death and maybe one day the Man upstairs will see fit to put us back together. However, that is my absolute favorite winter item. Wore the heck out of it last year and I'm going to do the same this year. Thank you everybody. :)
