Winter Overcoats

Gents,
I'm looking for a nice winter overcoat that won't break the bank.
What do you recommend?
I've looked at Barbour (by way of Orvis), but I'm not too sure what else to look at.

Are you looking for an overcoat to wear over a suit, or for casual?

Have you tried a p-coat?

Every guy should have a nice Pcoat in their closet. Go's as well with slacks as it does jeans, shirts as it does Tee's. Never out of style and it keeps you warm.

Are you looking for a full legth coat? If you're 42short I have one I need to get rid of for closet space. I would go to burlington for something affordable. Personally I spent a little more and bought an Woolrich Wollen Mills Wool coat. These seems to be very well made, look stylish, and tough too. LL Bean Signatur and Landsend Cnavass are having sales right now. Maybe check them out.

ahh, all good questions.
I'm looking for an overcoat for over a suit.
it can be very slushy and nasty in the winter where I live.
we get a lot of snow.

I think a full length one would be nice, but i'm open to suggestions.

I like a nice camelhair coat, personally. Unlike 98% of winter coats out there, it's not black/dark, and so it stands out a little bit more ... in a good way. It has the added advantage of giving you some additional visibility for motorists when crossing the street in the dark (which is most of the time in Canadain winters.)

Check out the Donegal. Tweed Autumn jacket at Carroll and Co. Or the similar walking jacket at Studio Donegal. The Barbour Beauchamp is excellent, but less dressy. I have used the Barbour for several Wisconsin Winters. Sierra Trading Post always has great deals from less well known companies aNd many are superb quality, with a very large selection as well.

Genuine Harris Tweed with the Orb trademark can't be beat. Exceptionally warm, durable and water resistant.

Winters here in Wisconsin can get nasty, but my overcoat has always come through for me.

Buy it once and you'll never need anything else.

All of the above are good suggestions. For something on the budget side try Joseph A Banks (only on sale!) I have 2 of their topcoats and there are really quite nice and serviceable and didn't break the bank. Also check Ebay-I picked up an absolutely fabulous vintage Harris Tweed for $25.00! I've worn it for several years and get complements all the time!

All of the above are nice and I have or have had them in my closet. (Camel hair, Pea Coat, etc,)

I just bought a Barbour Border model that would really do fine for an all-in-one coat if I had to make do with just one.

It is long enough to fit nicely over a sport coat or suit, but looks great over a sweater/jumper with jeans as well. Very versatile, but not terribly dressy if that is what you're looking for...

The liner makes it great for a cold weather garment, and taken out it is fine for a raincoat and cool weather coat. I'm liking mine.

Here's a thread I started about Barbours if you haven't seen it.

You could always go with the venerable London Fog or something similar. I would get one with a zip/button out lining that increases versatility for cold and not-so-cold-yet-still-nasty weather.

I love Camel Hair, and I'd love to wear one, but the color just is sickly on me for some reason.

Ralph Lauren full length Wool in charcoal for me.

Addressing the budget issue, I would try to buy the best overcoat I could. This is an essential piece in any gent's wardrobe and you want one that is a quality coat.

I purchased a Brooks Brothers cashmere overcoat and had Brooks put a black velour collar on it to give it that Chesterfield-look.

Sure it cost a little more but when you amortize over the years of service you get from it, the cost is negligible.

Same hold true for a Barbour (I have a lightweight Beaufort) and a Burberry raincoat. All staples to complement any men's wardrobe.

You can get some amazing deals on ebay. There are often high quality vintage wool overcoats that can be had for next to nothing compared to a similar quality new one... some don't even seem to be used.
