Williams

Smells like a block of ivory just pure and simple soap in a puck. Are there any good ones you can find at the local Rx?

I'm partial to VDH. Sometimes I melt it down and add Fragrance oil from the soap making section of our local hobby lobby.

my brother uses williams. Though I may have converted him to arko sticks. I'll know in a few days. :biggrin1:
I bought him a VDH puck at the local Rx and a tube of arko cream I had and he liked it. he drops some arko moisturizing cream on the puck to lather. like I do with my arko soaps. at $2- $3 the creams are great

I'll take Williams over VdH anyday... I just can't get past that 'baby-wipe' smell of VdH.

A little hot water and a densely packed badger brush gets me great lather from Williams.

Shave soaps last a Long Time. It's worth it to spend a few dollars for a good soap because it will be around for a few months. Proraso, RazoRock, Speick, Cella, Arko, etc. all produce world class products for reasonable prices, and they are available online where ever you are.

I like Williams and VdH, better yet, melt the VdH and pour it on a puck of Williams. VanderWilliams is a great lather.

any better than Williams?

VDH is easier to lather, but I don't think of it as better, just different.

For me, Williams lasts longer, provides better cushion, and is just flat out more satisfying to use than VDH. The VDH line of glycerin soaps is easier to lather and can be melted and mixed with fragrances or other soaps.

If you can get modern Williams to work for you, your lathering skills will be improved in the process, you will have brick and mortar availability of a decent tallow based soap, and you can peruse the Williams threads on B&B with the smug self satisfaction known only by Williams shavers and the kids who learn to tie their own shoes ahead of their peers.

Kiss my Face should be locally available

Stick your zip code into the Kiss My Face store locator to find a retailer near you and grab a tube ($5) or pump bottle ($8) of any scent.

These are amazing creams and one of the easiest to lather. They are sold as "brushless" but stick a brush to it and you will have a lava flow of slick, luxurious, lather to use.

I have VDH and Williams. In my opinion they are both fine as long as you don't have hard water. I think the water can be more important than the soap.

This was my thinking this morning when I went for my first wet shave ever. I have a puck of the VDH Deluxe on hand, but I'd heard mixed reviews on the Williams. Heard it was hard/impossible to lather. I decided to give it a try for the very reason you mention. I figured, if I can get this to work, even a little, I'm on my way. I imagine I can do better in the future, but I got a pretty decent shave out of it.
