What's new

Why?

I've been on the Internet since the days of Compuserve forums on my Tandy 1000 computer. I have been a part of many online forums, bulletin board systems (BBS), and virtual communities. But I have never in my life been involved with a group of people that are as willing to help, as supportive, as civil, and as generous as the group here at B&B...how and why has the B&B community become this way?

Has it always been this way?

Why do you help people on B&B?

I agree 100%. Never have I been on a forum where you havent called a 'noob' or told to 'search' everytime you post a thread!

The people that I have spoken to here in my short time have been some of the best on the internet.

  1. The very act of shaving with a DE, SE or straight requires a certain calmness, patience and willingness to accept some small adversity for the reward of the results and the sheer enjoyment of the moment for what it is. The high strung and those with short attention spans or ill temper tend to pass it by or move on.
  2. I think a lot of folks have a profound sense of gratefulness for the kindness, patience and willingness to help that they experienced when they came here.
  3. There is also a profound gratefulness for the results and serenity that traditional shaving has brought to irritated faces and hectic lives. Having been given this gold, the Golden Rule is in force.
  4. The mods are brutal.

As in any organization, the man at the top sets the tone. It has nothing to do with shaving but entirely with the character of Joel, who is accessible, knowledgeable and a gentleman. The proof of this is that there is another popular shaving forum where the atmosphere is entirely different, all due to the personality of the owner.

+1 This is the first forum I've ever joined, rather than just lurked around. Had no hesitation signing up as a contributor either

I think Top has hit the nail on the head.
I might add that in addition to the Mods keeping on top of things, I think it is helpful that there are a larger quantity of them than on many other forums.

I think B&B is a rarity as far as attitude goes. The only other forum that I'm on that even comes close to the spirit of brotherhood I've seen is my audiophile board. I've only been here a short time, but I love it here.

+1 I was actually taken aback when I first started lurking on this forum, I have never come across anything like it. mostly beloning to computer/tech related forums the complete absence of people "flamming" eachother and gratuitous use "words" like; "pwn", "stfu", fail , etc. not to mention on that note that most replies dont consist of one worded internet slang but are well thought out complete sentences! So heres to all the great members of B&B !!

+1 on all the comments above.

This is as many have said the nicest group of people I have encountered in all my days. Everyone bends over backwards to help one another. No matter what subject or discussion. If there is a disagreement it is smoothed over in a heartbeat from within the people in that forum or with a gentle nudge :001_smile of a moderator.

Glad to be here and thanks to all.

I am new here so I'm just guessing... The founders wanted this to be a great place to share your experience and help others out. They wanted it to be a friendly place that people would be happy to visit. They set the tone at the get go and everyone has followed suit. Not to say they are being nice just to participate, but this site brings out the best in us. My hats are off to the founders, and mods who keep things running smoothly!!!! Larry

P.S. If this is totaly false, don't tell me and ruin my illusion.

I'm sure the generally older demographic here has plenty to do with it too, and does set the tone.

In my experience of 'younger' interest topic forums, the behaviour there is everything you've come to expect of the net. Many are so big and busy the mods can't really keep up, or be bothered doing so, unless things get really ugly.

What a fantastic thread to start my day with! My simple answer -- gentlemen such as yourselves. We're nothing without our cordial and giving members.

I this literally made me LOL- everyone's staring at me at work right now.

I agree wholeheartedly (with the first three ) however. You may see the same threads about which razor, brush, soap/cream to start with, but everyone answers them each time- and everyone usually learns new things from this.

I try to help because I've always been treated with kindness and respect on B&B. That's rare enough in the real world, and unheard of on an internet forum. I'm meeting some NYC-based B&B members tomorrow- no way in hell I'd do that with any other forum!

Honestly though, the mods don't screw around either :lol::lol:

Edit: Uh oh, this is the post right after a mod posts.....

This is a very helpful forum in general, and the people do tend to be kind to newbies, perhaps unusually so.

It's only fair to note, though, that I've encountered similar helpfulness on a couple of bicycling forums. Anywhere on the Internet where people gather to talk about a common interest, you'll find a few kind souls who get a kick out of sharing their knowledge and encouraging novices. Maybe there's less flaming when people are sharing hard, factual, information.

I can't find any disagreement with anyone's answers above - they are all 100%!

I have found B&B to be a most positive experience - unlike other forums that I have only lurked on, I joined here due to the gentlemanly conduct that abounds. Even if someone shares a differing opinion, nobody gets "flamed".

I know everyone doesn't always agree with me . . .

I feel good every time a newbie asks a question and gets a respectful answer. Personally, I feel special if I get to be the one that answers that question, shares a suggestion, or offers a link to more (and better) information!

Although we have never met in person, I feel like I have many friends here and look forward to reading their posts. This is a great place, which of course, is what prompted the OP's observation!:thumbup1:

By the way . . . I also dislike internet slang . . . but find myself using a little every once in a while! LOL

+1. It is a great forum to be sure.

I agree with what's said above. I remember my first flame war on Woz's dial-up BBS and still run about a half dozen mailing lists and moderate 2 boards. This is by far the most mature and least drama of all of them. I think the nature of the topic (SE/DE shaving) restricts the audience to people both wanting to learn and wanting to share. It also results in a generally more mature (both intellectually and in age) audience. No 12-yo's trolling for reactions.

I'm really happy, and proud, to be a member.
