What's new

Why is it that all great shaving creams/soaps I am not a big fan of their scent?

You don't have to answer my question, it's rhetoric.

First I tried Proraso, great pre/post cream, great cream and soap, great a/s balm, great shave. I have not found a Proraso product I don't like. Except the smell, I'm not a big fan of the camphor like smell.

Today I shaved with SCS Bulgarian Lavender soap and finished with the matching a/s by the same name. Again, great shave, it reminds me greatly of Proraso, in fact except for the smell the products feel like Proraso clones. But I'm not a big fan of the strong Lavender scent. At least it goes away quickly.

I found some creams and soaps that I really enjoy the scent, but the shave quality was blah, doesn't even come close to the above.

So I guess I'm doomed to great shaves using products with less than stellar scents (at least in the opinion of my nose).

I don't think you need to be resigned to good shaves with unappealing smells. There are plent of soaps and creams that work well with stellar scents. If you don't like the SCS Lavender, try another scent. Sue has some fantastic smelling products. You can also try PS Green Tea, which I think is one of the best scents out there once you let the soap breathe a little. What kind of scents are you fond of? Maybe we can reccommend something.

I have a PS Green Tea soap and matching aftershave order with Santa. I hope I like it.

I liked the scents of TOBS Sensitive cream and T&H Grafton cream (only had a small sample) but I didn't like the feel of the shave with either. Maybe I still have to work at it, it may be my technique as I'm fairly new to DE wet shaving.

Maybe I should find an unscented cream or soap that works well, though I understand that even the unscented smell like something: their ingredients.

Consider getting Taylors Avacado. It has a green scent and fades quickly. I just bought some from gentlemensbest.com after a 2 year absence from my den.

Are all TOBS creams the same in terms of ingredients and they just vary the perfume they use? I guess my questions is will all creams/soaps from a given brand give you an equal shave because really all that's different is the scent?

Ah the other one I tried and forgot about is a sample of NancyBoy replenishing which smells like cucumber. Again great shave (though I had better luck brushless than using a brush) but the scent was not something I enjoyed. Maybe I can combine TOBS Avocado with NB Replenishing and make a super salad...I mean super lather

At this point I have no preference soap or cream, I'd probably like to use both.

I think there are a lot of great soaps (i personally prefer soaps over creams). But the best I've tried have been the D.R. Harris and GFT. Both top notch and as good (or better) than proraso cream.

I also find that the TSD aftershave milk is awesome and you can get that in any scent you want.

I'm sure you'll find something that works for you and your nose, just keep trying them out!

Although I have not used it, I have seen extremely positive reviews of the AoS Unscented. You could also try other very mildly scented creams, such as Trumper's Coconut Oil or the Vintage Blades house brand of creams, which are very mildly scented.

Does anyone know who makes the creams for AoS and if they are the same as another brand (i.e. read cheaper)? I'm on a tight budget here, this experimentation is expensive. For those of us who got into DE wet shaving to save money - forget it, it turns out it's more expensive than paying Gillette for their 7-blade cartridges. But it's a lot of fun and that's what's important in life, isn't it?

Have you considered trying a different SCS scent? If you like the way they shave, they carry enough different fragrances that you should be able to find one you like.

Yes, I should get the unscented, then I will never have buyer's remorse or the temptation to buy all the scents. And I do not hate the scents of Proraso and Lavender it's just that I prefer they smelled like other creams and soaps I sniffed. But for a great shave I have no problem using either of them. In fact when I experiment with something and butcher my face, my next shave is with Proraso to give my face a break. And that Proraso balm or pre/post cream seems to fix a shave gone wrong.

If you didn't get good shaves from TOBS and T&H then you probably didn't get good lather. :tongue_sm I'm not sure I've found better yet after weeks of use of Truefitt.

Can't miss products that perform fantastic and have minimal/universally loved scents: Speick cream, Mama Bear's Rosemary Mint, and Nancy Boy's Signature Cream.

I recently reviewed LEA shaving cream from Spain, which has a pleasant, slightly floral, soapy-like scent that I think most guys would either enjoy or not be offended by.

For AOS cream, just go to one of their stores and ask for some samples of shave cream. I'd do that before shelling out $22 for a tub.
