why does safety razor blade have a curve?

Before I used a safety razor I thought the blade layed flat in the shaver like most disposable razors.
What is the advantage of curving the blade?

Have another look at your Disposables, they may be flat but they are on an angle set to cut properly, The curve the head makes to the blade makes it more natural for your hand to make that angle, if it laid flat you would have a funky angle your hand would have to make to get the blade set for cutting.

If you follow what im saying

In addition to getting the angle right, the curve also helps to stabilize the blade to reduce flexing of the edge, since metal can not flex in two directions at once.

Single-edge razors do not force a curve into the blade, nor do straights.

Some DE razors present the blade more "flatly" to the face than others. For example, the blade feel on an Old Type is much more stiff feeling than that of the NEW, because the blade is bent at a sharper angle downward. I am no engineer, but I am sure there is an optimal range of flex that allows the blade to perform at it's maximum while being stable. To little bend and the edge can flex. Not sure what happens with too much bend, but extreme's of any type generally are not good....except when it comes to skimpy women's clothing.
