Why do I get a better shave with.....

Hello,

Can somebody try to help me understand, why I get a better shave with a Feather Portable compared to a 34c? I thought this was supposed to be a travel razor. I like the small handle, it feels more nimble; but I figured it would be a travel razor and not an every day razor.

If I would have known, I would have bought the portable first and spend the extra money of a better brush/soap/etc....

Who am I kidding, I would eventually buy the 34c.

It's a different model of razor and we all have different faces. Just like soap, blades, brushes, Aftershave, we have different needs and taste.

Travel razors just have shorter handles than standard razors. The heads are the same which is the bit you shave with. The Feather portable is a fine shaving razor.

I sold my 34c.....it just didn't work for me as well as other razors. Like everybody says, YMMV. I would like to try a slant though, and see how that works for me.

I would suspect you get better shaves due to the dimensions of the head being different. The Portable could be more aggressive as well.

The Feather Portable is about the same size as a Gillette Tech (the handle is just slightly shorter). The Tech is not considered to be a travel razor. The "portable" designation has less to do with the overall size of the razor, and more to do with it breaking down into 3 pieces, and nicely fitting inside of a small box for travel.

I don't at all consider the Feather Portable to be a travel razor, and it would work perfectly fine for an everyday razor, just as a Tech does.

True travel razors tend to have very very short handles....

I've often wondered why I get the best shave out of an $8 razor. I use a Feather Portable head on a Bull Mastiff handle as my daily driver. The travel handle was a little small for my lack of dexterity but is easy to swich out to something more user friendly.

I have this same set up as well and really enjoy shaving with it. I do rotate other razors but I enjoy this combo when using it. The heavy Bull Mastiff handle balances perfectly with the light Feather portable head. I also love using the Muhle handle from my EJ89L on a Fat Tech handle. Just the opposite feel: heavy head, light handle. Perfect balance. Excellent combo.

I think a razor can be too light or too heavy and these combos seem to really solve that problem for me. On an ATG pass, the weight of that Muhle head pulls that EJ89L handle right out of hand. A nice knurled handle ( Fat Tech) solves this for me.
