Why Did This British NEW Sell For So much?

Thats a very nice looking No 77 set. Quite popular with collectors, I think they were only made for a year or two.

I think you are quoting a low end price there. $50USD for a cased #77 is pretty darn good price I think. But I have one of those green bakelite cased #77s and I may have paid around that much for it. Obviously, it's the Green case that gets that price, not that many I've seen. Also, the green bakelite blade holders look intact, they are fairly fragile.

As far as the green bakelite goes, bakelite is predominately dark brown. Anything colored that you see called bakelite is actually catalin (think butterscotch brush handles). So green bakelite is pretty rare I think. Whenever I say something like that, you will start seeing it everywhere. :001_rolle

Did I pay too much for mine or that person for theirs? I don't think so.

Don't know what the "right" price for a #77 set is but as it happens I've been watching these closely recently and that price seems quite high to me. That's twice as much as some I've seen.

Forgot to mention, much depends on the condition of course. No cracks on the handle & plating intact etc. -> price shoots up accordingly, and rightfully so.

Recently I saw a mint, nos #77 with cardboard box go for 10 pounds on ebay. I would have bid on it, but I already have an #88.

Ebay is a strange, strange place.
