Who's Buying These?

I use an F4 Fatboy that I got from my father so when I'm surfing Ebay I naturally take note of the Fatboys listed.

http://cgi.ebay.com/GILLETTE-OLD-FASHION-FATBOY-ADJ-1-9-SAFETY-RAZOR-/220709269468?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item33634c2fdc

When I saw this razor, and several others from the same seller, I was surprised. Are we actually paying this much for a Fatboy? He's got others that include the original box/packaging that are going for as much as $400. Is this guy pricing himself out of the market?

Thanks,

Tony

He seems to have a huge amount of Fatboys for sale. They all appear to be in really good shape as well. Makes me wonder if he is doing re-plating jobs, but not telling this (critical) piece of information to his potential buyers. :thumbdown

I sure as heck would not even consider paying that much for a razor. Now if it was the complete package maybe but even then WOW! Last week while out hitting the antique stores in my area I found a really nasty looking 1959 Fatboy. Got it mostly cleaned up and found out what I thought was plating loss was actually yellowed soap scum. Works perfect and the numbering is still black. I paid a whopping 4 bucks for it.

Some of these people put insane prices on these razors. Either someone buys them or they eventually figure out that they set the price too high and if they want someone to buy it they have to lower the price some.

If someone wants to pay top dollar for a shiny and pretty Fatboy I see no problem with it necessarily, unless there is some sort of sneaky replating going on as has been discussed.

But even then, I don't necessarily know if replating would hurt an unboxed, run of the mill Fatboy. 25 years from now, will the average razor collector give a hoot whether that unboxed run of the mill Fatboy had been replated in its past or not? I honestly don't know.

If the ebay guys can get a hundred bucks a pop for those, more power to them I guess.

The dude is an unrepentant opportunist. I steer clear of any seller who sets a high "Buy Now" price. If bidders want to compete and pay $99 for a Fatboy, that is fine. Start the bid at $0.99 and let informed buyers determine the value. I would hate to be this guy's grandma.

Just checked those out ... WOW ... some crazy high prices for the cased FBs. Anywhere from $149-$399! And you can't even zoom in or see other angle shots. At leasr cedarfurnitureman gives you that - and (usually) lets the bidding run from .99c or so. I don't get it these outlandish prices. To each his own.

I would hate to be this guy's grandma.

My first impression is that it is shiny like a new one, so if it is replated that factors into the price. You have to have more than a passing interest in razors to keep the materials and equipment to replate on hand.

My second impression is that he has 96.3% positive feedback. If there is more than one bad rating in the last six months I have to really want the item bad to even consider it.

He isn't giving it away, but it's probably not as bad as it looks on first impression.

If you look at his feedback as a buyer he has bought a ton of FatBoys and IMO overpaid for a lot of them himself (although nothing compared to the markup he has). He has bought uncased Fat Boys for 60 or more dollars which is absurd in my mind, but if there's a market more power to him I guess.

I don't know about this guy as he seems to have just a few razors, but there is another dude on the bay with a seemingly limitless supply of extraordinarily shiny and pristine razors who I've always suspected of replating.

In answer to the original question, the old saw comes to mind, that a fool and his money are soon parted .. as Dan points out he has some poor feedback & his responses to that are very telling.

Something that always bothered me about that old saying, how did the old fool acquire his money to start with and is there a supply of it coming in from somewhere?

What if the word "fool" was changed to "government"?

spelling error, read again-

Even a fool can get a job. Just because he or she is foolish doesn't mean they aren't competant at even elaborate or difficult tasks. I would consider a great proportion of of the U.S. population beyond foolish ideologically, but it bears no weight in their averge income. And if the adage were changed it wouldn't make sense as it wouldn't really tell you anything. The word "fool" inherently bears negative connotation, where as "government" is value neutral which is why we add modifiers like "good," "bad," or "foolish" when speaking of it. In either case, if you're trying to stir up populist support for the idea that the government is a bunch of fools, I think this is the wrong forum; you might try a Glenn Beck fan-site.

I'm sure there are people who would be prepared to pay tht much for a Fatboy! (not me though!)... If it was a bottom dial than I am sure I would be keen
