What's new

Who loves the Super Speeds?

Ever since I started shaving in the 1970s I have always used a double edge razor. That is all my dad had so I really never seen a choice in shaving, I used his 1955 blue tip Super Speed and used it up until 1983 when I bought my first new razor which was a Super Speed of that year. I've always used a brush and soap, just never took to being too modern I guess. I have never found a razor that outshaves my Super Speed black handled razor. Until I seen this site I had never thought of the style of shaving I was doing as wet shaving, I never thought there was another way to shave other than with an electric. My youngest now shaves with my dads blue tip Super Speed and I still press on with old faithful. It still looks like new and shaves just as well. Hats off to the Super Speeds.

40's Super Speeds with no date code are one of my favorite razors. The feel of it is quite a bit different than most of the other ones.

Kudos on liking the Super Speed. I had two but gave one to my son. He really likes it alot. Said he got and excellent smooth shave with no cuts or irritation. I used my SS today with a 7o'clock black and got a bbs shave with no irritaiton. Wasn't even trying for a bbs, just sort of happened (after two passes and clean up). they are a great razor and I find them on the mild/moderate side. Definately less aggressive than my Merkur 34c HD ( which is pretty much my daily shaver).

That's the thing. Super Speeds have a mild smooth feel, but magically, they are extremely efficient. Aggressiveness does play a part in how efficient a shave is, but that all goes out the window with a Super Speed.

I really like superspeeds. I have a 40s and a Red tip. The redtip is my favorite vintage razor. I got lucky at a garage sale today and picked up a 54 flare tip for a really good price. And it is in superb condition.

I have a Late 50's Flare Tip Rocket, a british Superspeed, and I love it. Definitely a favorite.

I also have a Red Tip and Black handle, but prefer the shave the Rocket provides me over the others.

I have a blue tip and recently purchased a red tip, it's still in the mail. I really like how they shave, awesome razors!

My sons and I all use Super Speed flair tips. I use it for my quick before work shaves. It provides a fast and excellent shave. I enjoy using my other razors, but the flair tip is my go to choice in a pinch. In fact, even though it wasn't very economical to do so, I just had my flair tip replated in nickel and expect to be able to pass it on to one of my grandkids in pretty much the same condition as I got it.

I bought an inexpensive Superspeed knock-off. Not sure what it is, I think it's a Japanese-made DE razor. Not sure. It's ok, but not the best beginner's raozr -- a bit aggressive. Raozor burn and the occasional nick ensued. Much better was an EJ DE89, barley handled. Very happy with that, awesome razor. Getting a Weber Bulldog handle only made it better (except for making me realize I was stupid for getting the Barley handle -- which is great -- if I'm not going to use it anyway).
Then, as a gift, I bought a Superspeed flare-ti on the B/S/T forum. That was for a younger friend of mine that I was trying to get into wet shaving. Damn if it wasn't the greatest razor* ever. But I couldn't keep it, because i already promised it to my friend James. And he's more of a newbie than I am -- and I think it's a better newbie razor (and was super cheap).
------------
*not only YMMV, but I'm too new to know, so please don't take "greatest" literally. Point is, I got a close, nick-free, irritation free, fast shave done with the $15 Superspeed. And shaves with the $85 DE rig have been... almost as good.

I love my birthyear SS ('78) which I bough as NOS but in terms of shave quality (smoothness/effectiveness) I prefer my 40's Tech.

I did notice a difference in the shave with my SS using the Gillette 7o'clock black as opposed to my usual Generic Personna. Got a much better shave with the 7o'clock. Nice audio feedback but couldn't feel the blade at all. Can't wait to try it with my ASTRA SP blades.
Wonder how it would work with a Feather blade - something surgical sharp? Hmmmmmmm

I do. I have my dad's birthyear/quarter X1 black tip, my own birthyear/quarter W1 black handle, and my mother's birthyear/quarter Y2 40's style is away getting replated in rhodium. Those are my favorites.... plus my red tip and my '58 TV Special.

Mine was NOS and similarly packed, it was also my birthquarter. I did not hesitate for a moment and opened it. I figured the razor and I had been waiting long enough.

I tried one of the blades that came with it and it was horrible. With my usual blades, it's a lovely razor.

 for the Super Speeds. I have a Super Speed Flare Tip 'S' Rocket from the 60s in rotation. It works very well for me as a daily razor. I think the appreciation of milder razors raises with the improvement of the technique.
