Which Razor? Was it worth it?

I was visiting some antique stores, out on Long Island, and all the shaving equipment was WAY overpriced, with one possible exception...

This was a Gilette adjustable. As a noob, I would say it was a one piece, with bombay doors doors that worked nicely. The adjustment knob had the odd numbers that were stamped or cut and then painted black. They were relatively large (1/8") and then had black dots for the even numbers. The adjustment was a crisp snap, between each setting.

It had a knurled handle that was perhaps a little shorter than my Merkur, HD and had a really nice heft.

Does anyone know what I was looking at? I did not buy it, but I am wishing I had... It was $15, but everything else in the place was super high and I was just not sure I needed anouther razor.

Switching topics a bit, I have a Merkur HD and a slant. What would be the best, next razor to add (an adjustable).

Like one of the ones in my sig.... ??????

Or black handled...
Or gold...
Or had a "toggle" on the end of it ???

Choose your match from the guru's collection here:

and let us know :biggrin1:

Whichever it is, if it's in good working clean, working order then $15 is definitely a bargain. Perhaps because it's only from the 50s or 60s it's not really "antique" :biggrin1:

My guess FWIW ( and only from the "heft" comment ) ..... Fatboy and would be the right adjustable to go with the HD ( again IMHO)

I am sure I was looking at a 1961 Fatboy. It was just the razor -- I wish I had gotten it now. At any rate, I will know better when I go looking again. If $15 is a bargan, what is a fair price?

Another one, in a plastic case, looked like the Black Beauty, but had a blue handle. It was marked $35 and I really did not give it a second look.

Nice site. I am going to save it. Thanks!

The Blue handle would have been a Gillette Lady--did it have small blue stars on the upper portion of the handle? These can be had for $20 (or less) in good condition, tho with the case they can run a bit more. I would not ever pay $35 unless I was a collector.

$20 for the slim adjustable is fair, up to $30 for the fatboy is fair.
If you're lucky you can get them at these prices with a case (the right case), if so, it's a bargain. But $17 and $25 respectively without a case is very good too.
