Merkur makes a nice razor, the HD is reported to be a fine piece of equipment. There are some other new razor manufacturers as well, all with varying degrees of quality control.
If you want that solidly built vintage razor though, a Gillette is the way to go.
The Buy Sell trade forum here has very good quality razors for very reasonable prices.
A Nice Superspeed would serve you well, as would a Tech and a Tech can be had very very cheaply.

I tend to recommend the Merkur HD, as well, but the difference between any of them isn't so large as to preclude you from finding something you used before and loving it again. Let us know what you decide!

hi luvmysuper
thanks ,did have a look at the merker range the 37c slant bar or the 34c and the 933cl travel break down .all look good also liked the 1904 replica nickel.seen the all on the shaving shack uk . the parker range look ok to .. the travel ones look handy for using when on holiday ,popular with the forces too . the slant bar one looks the serious shaver ,not for the faint hearted ,might look like you been in a horror movie if you get it wrong .
thanks rac

hi gruder
the hd looks like the one to choose ,be nice to try a few out .
thanks .

If you have a soft beard and are happy with your gillette (probably a tech), id go with another 3 piece gillette tech or a 50s gillette flare tip super speed. A merkur HD has a larger blade gap, is more aggressive, and probably wont give you a better shave. A vintage gillette will probably cost half as much as the merkur, too.

In an older razor I'd look at a SS or a Tech. Both are nice and not too aggressive. If you want a new razor I'd highly recommend the Muhle R89.

hi all
thanks for the answers ,have not decided yet what to buy:confused: ,got a few in mind ,sometime next week make an order .thanks rac.:biggrin1:

Any of the Merkur's would be a good choice. I have several, and have just decided on their 1904 as my personal best. Its my go to razor for now. I have a rotation of 9 razors that I now use, and however I feel doing my shave prep decides which I'll use. The 1904 is the front runner however.

hi all
well big dilemma .off to Borneo soon so for the time being ordered a murker 933cl travel one .think i will also buy a 1904 .i believe i read that the 1904 head will fit on the travel one .a slant 37c possibly a hd 34c and that should see me out ,old 3 piece Gillette has now seen better days ,can tell a few stories over 30 years ,good one to read in SHAVING SOAPS.:eek:soaps or other?
now need to go and research travel soaps and gels .need something quite compact.
