I have an ever ready 452L, soon to be ready for a new 18mm knot. The old knot pulled right out.

Which knot would you recommend?

TGN has Best, Finest, or Standard Silvertip

I own several TGN Finest knots already and love them, but has anyone tried the Standard Silvertip or Best?

I have also wondered about the Best. I like scritch and I always wanted to try one but have yet to do it. I also have a silvertip though but it is a 24mm knot. Very nice handle too.

I have a few brushes with Best and I honestly cannot tell much difference between that and the Silvertip. The scritchiness feels the same to me, but the Best does seem to possess a little more backbone.

Is that Standard Silvertip different from Silvertip?

Thank you gentlemen, I'm leaning toward the Best, just because I have never tried a TGN Best. I wonder how it compares to the TGN Finest?

The Finest feels a little softer to my face than the Best and it definitely has more backbone.

Unless you're a "Princess and the Pea" type, I don't see how anybody could tell the difference between Silvertip and Best, other than the fact that Best has slightly more backbone. That being said, if you're inclined toward Best, then go for it. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Here's some comparison shots of Best and Silvertip. Can you tell which is which?

And no peeking at my other restoration threads for the answer. :hand:

+1 vote for Best. I have a short loft Best from TGN and i'm in love with it, my go to knot for most of my future restores i suspect.

For me, there is no choice between Silvertip and Finest. Finest wins. Hands down.

I have no experience with finest replacement knots, just silver tip grade A. What are the qualities of the finest that you like? I like super soft tips myself.

Finest! The tips are very soft, but the brush itself has backbone. That gives it everything I look for in a brush. You will join the legion of Finest fans should you try one.

I love the TGN finest, currently own 2 of them, and have used them in 3 restored brushes that I sold. After exchanging emails with Tony, I decided to go with best on this one, just because I've never tried best from TGN.

The Grade A silvertip was not available in 18mm, only standard silvertip, which Tony said was more "scrichy" than the best.

The knot (TGN 18mm Best) arrived and after dry fitting, set it with 2 part epoxy mixed with black paint. The best knot is nice, nicer than say tweezerman, reminds me of the Simpson Somerset Pure. The knot has more scritch, and has less backbone than the finest. Since they were the same price, I wish I had got the finest.

The other issue is that I wish I had painted the inside of the handle first, let it dry, then set the knot. I mixed the epoxy with paint, coated the bottom and walls and set the knot. After drying, you can see some air bubbles in the handle.
