Which Brush, Omega 11047, Or 50014

Which Brush, Omega 11047, Or 50014

I’m considering the Omega mixedBadger & Boar brush (11047) “Mighty Midget”, or the Omega(50014) travel brush. Which ever one I ultimately get will get usedprimarily with travel purposes in mind and maybe occasionally athome.

My concern with the (11047) “MightyMidget” is that it may be too prickly, that Badger used in thisbrush maybe of too low of grade to provide a comfortable experience. What I like about the mix of the two types of bristles, is that thebrush will likely dry more quickly than a purely Boar brush. My homeOmega (10005) medium sized boar, as an example, usually takes morethan 24 hours to dry, which isn’t a good situation when travelingwith a single brush.

Other than the ability to dry quickly,I don't normally prefer a Badger over a Boar brush, so I am alsoconsidering the (50014). This model is designed as a “travelbrush”, with a handle that also converts into a travel tube for thebrush. But will it dry fast enough?

Any member own either, or both of thesebrushes? If so any thoughts on them?

Also does anyone offer a mixed Badger / Boar knot that might have a higher quality Badger component that I could perhaps install in my own handle?

Omega 11047 is a stiff and scrubby face exfoliator .
Omega 50014 is soft , floppy , and the more comfortable of the 2 . It's serviceable but doesn't build a lather as well as the 11047 .
Ultimately you may want to try one of the new synthetics ; Omega Hi-Brush , Kent Infinity , Muhle V2.0 .
Or re-consider a badger such as a Simpson Case with travel case .

It sounds like the 11047 might be my best bet of the two, as I don't like floppy.

The Simpson, Kent, Muhle are way outside my budget.

Dave,

Have you considered a synthetic? I have a Muhle synthetic and an Omega synthetic. I love both brushes. Worth a look. Both are reasonable on cost.

I bought a 11047 a year ago for travel use and use it regularly in my rotation at home. Nice backbone and I don't find it to be prickly at all.

I own the mighty midget and an omega 10048, which is very similar to the 50014.

The 11047 is not scratchy at all imo. It has a good backbone

Both brushes soften up over time and the little amount of scratchiness almost goes away completely.

Both of those are good brushes and you can't really make a mistake by ordering either of them.

I don't own a 10047 but my main gripe with mixed brushes is the low grade of badger used in most of them. They lather great but even after a long time the prickliness is still there, though the worst of that goes away with use.

I do own a 50014 and I do like it. It softens up pretty fast while keeping a decent amount of backbone. Someone commented that it was a floppy brush but that is simply not true. It is not a superstiff brush but calling it floppy is rather ridiculous imo.

The 50014 is the brush that convinced me to use shorter brushes at home as well. It is a great facelatherer and can easily loose its water after use thanks to the open travelcase. Though boar is maybe not the first choice for a travel brush I never had any issue with drying time with this one.

I think a synthetic would be hard to beat for a travel brush. Actually, one could be pretty hard to beat from a utilitarian perspective, period. They do everything pretty well.

I don't understand the "floppy" comment about the 50014 either...this is a stiff little brush for me, but I've only used it a handful of times so far. It is very "springy" when I facelather. It's a small knot and is awkward if you try to use it when mounted on the plastic turnback, but the small little brush itself is quite comfortable. I can't say it's a quick dryer, but that depends on the humidity of your accommodations too. Haven't had any problems with the knot rotting out or anything because of the open bottom of the tube. It's a very solid little travel brush for ~$10.

After being in the forum for many months, I have realised that one's man backbone is another man's floppiness.

Pros of 11047:
a. very nice backbone, without being overly stiff
b. nice scrub

Cons of 11047:
a. Handle too short and I tend to get lather all over my hand (face lather. Worse, if you bowl lather)
b. a bit of scritch (a lot of scritch if you use pressure)

I don't have the 50014 but its hair specs looks like my 10275. This one has a nice soft tips and decent backbone (not as strong as the midget). I like it for:
a. eats soap as good as the midget
b. less lather on the hand
c. releases lather generously
d. soft on the face.
e. nice backbone (more than enough for my enjoyment while face lathering).

Between the 2, for travelling, I would go for the 50014

In true B&B fashion I've decided to purchase one of each, since they are inexpensive. Nothing like finding out for yourself. Thank you all for your input.

I bought the Omega 50014 a few months ago when I knew I was going on a trip. I got it from QED and it was about $9.00. It broke in quickly and I used it a few times to see how I liked it. It was definitely not floppy, but the problem for me was, it just didn't hold enough lather for two passes and a touch up. I wound up getting the Muhle 21mm V2 Synthetic and it immediately found itself in my regular rotation. I got home yesterday from my trip and I'm very pleased with the Muhle.

Thanks for the recommendation. However, for some reason I just can't come to terms with the idea of a "synthetic" bristle shaving brush. I know it's irrational just a mental block I guess?
