Where to go in Paris?

I currently have a family member in Paris on business. Are there any products out there she would easily be able to pick up for me? Straights, soaps, brushes...etc. I'm not sure what companies are out of France, let alone in Paris (if any) so any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Marc,
There are two things that, were I in Paris, would load up on. One is the MdC which you can buy at Planete Rasoir at 58 Rue de Clichy. Save about 20 euros in shipping. Get the fougere and the classic, skip the unscented. If you don't like it, sell it for at least what you paid for it including covering the cost of your shipping to the recipient. Should take about 3 minutes on the BST.

The other item is simply the best aftershave I've ever tried. It's called Eau D'Emeraude (Emerald Water) and it's made by Benedictine nuns according to a 500 year old recipe. There's a store in Paris that sells only goods from all the Monasteries in France. It's called L'Aide au Travail des Cloitres and is located at 68 bis avenue Donfert-Rochereau. Get her to bring back as many bottles as she can reasonably transport. If you don't like it, I'll happily pay you what you paid including shipping. Seriously. I will. It cannot be bought outside of France and it's gobsmackingly expensive to ship. Buy it there, however, and it's not terribly expensive at all. I think about 20 bucks for reasonably sized bottle.

Most other stuff you can buy here or have shipped here at pretty reasonable prices, but those two items when bought locally represent real value on best of breed products.

You can get it from Buckfast Abbey in the UK...

I've no idea what shipping to the US from there would be (or whether it's even possible with postage restrictions on alcohol), but it might be worth checking.

+ 1 on both MdC and Eau D'Emeraude. They are both top-notch products.

Thanks, I let her know and asked to grab a bunch of each. The MdC is a soap right? Tomorrow is her last day and they are leaving Monday so hopefully she can make her way to the store.

It's two different stores, btw. Also, there's a cafe across the street from the one that sells monastery goods that was frequented by Sartre, Hemingway, de Beauvoir and a bunch of other famous artistes types.

MdC is not just a soap, it is THE soap.

As it has been said, Martin de Candre soap is THE french soap that you should buy.
It gives you a great protection for the skin and the foam doesn't dry so fast, so it's perfect for a shave with a straight razor.
But be careful with planete rasoir shop, excepted the MDC soap, all producs are very expensive and seller's advices are very poor quality (Sellers of this shop don't shave themselves with DE and straight razors!!!). And in this shop, NEVER let a straight razor to be honed, results can be disastrous.

She didn't get a chance to go to any of the stores, I asked too late. Thanks for the help though everyone.

Ask me about shaving naked!
Blackhawk,

Thank you for the thread!

I''m going to Paris before too long.

Cheers, Steve

Edit: sorry, I missed the thing about already visiting. So, fwiw:

Something easy would be to duck into a Monoprix or Franprix and pick up some Palmolive w/aloe vera shave cream or a Wilkinson soap puck. They also have some cheap-o Brut and Tabac shaving creams. Not really worth it, to my mind, but it is what's commonly available.

P.S., certain small corner pharmacies in Paris will sell Dovo straight razors and Plisson brushes and pasted Solingen saddle strops. If they do, they will often display some token examples in the window display cases (vitrines). Off the top of my head, there's one at one end of the rue Delambre (14e), near the gare Montparnasse, that does, and another on the rue Saint-Sulpice, near the cafe de la Marie (6e--a very expensive quartier, to put it lightly). Not really all that exotic compared to what can be found online, but they're out there all the same.

Just asked my girlfriend to get me some MDC as she is off to Paris tomorrow. She was fine till she heard the price, even when I said I'd pay.... Now i am in the doghouse....AND I have no soap! So now I have to go all furtive on her clearly

Just came across this this AM.
not sure exactly where this is but the Saint Ouen antique mart has a vendor Mr. Davoudian's Le Curieux which apparently pricey specializes in high end 1800s razors. Might be fun to at least take a look.

I bet totorlekiller would have some good recommendations, particularly in the acquisition of straight razors.
