When you search for "shaving with a straight razor"

http://www.motherearthnews.com/Do-It-Yourself/1972-03-01/How-To-Use-A-Straight-Razor.aspx

This is the first article that comes up.

While I've only just started with straights and haven't even had my first one arrive yet, everything I've read here contradicts most of the stuff said in that article. The article says things like you shouldn't spend more than a couple dollars on a straight, that you can grab one at an antique store and sharpen it yourself with no training and shave with it, that you should shave ATG one pass and nothing else, etc. Some of the info is good and the author was clearly well meaning. Maybe what he wrote works for him, but he seems to imply he knows a lot about what he's talking about.

I don't know what it would take to move B&B or even SRP up higher than that in results, but I feel like if someone wanted to try straights and was impatient and only read the one site, they'd be in for some serious trouble.

"And don't EVER leave that thing lying around where your little boy can get it; children love to imitate paddy shaving, and emergency calls are expensive."

Lol expensive... And potentially life threatening! I guess it works for him. YMMV and such!

I may have read this article when it was written in 1972!

So adjust all of the prices referenced in the article. Say, multiply by ten. He says only pay about $2 for a razor, make that $20. Some good stuff in the article.

I like this quote, "but I personally won't touch the aerosol creams."

The entire thing is worth a read. Just remember the era. It really was a weird time, not like now.:001_rolle

Not a bad introductory article. You can do what he has done. There are better resources and instructions here at B&B though.

Oy! I didn't even notice the date!

It's a testament to that guy's writing, then, that I thought it was a recent blog post by some guy who picked up a straight and blogged about it.

With that in mind, I'm a little less upset about this guy giving slightly outdated advice :)
