when the shaving soap is a obsession?
you enjoy it ?
do you use all the shaving soap in your collection?
who is the most old soap in your collection?
Over 3 years into this "obsession", I have arrived at the use of 3 soaps that are in my mind classics and produced where obtaining them is easy and affordable. Mitchell's Wool Fat, Tabac, & Geo. F. Trumper Rose. For me, they satisfy in various ways and are distinctly different enough to provide some variety. I really have no desire to venture elsewhere, new, vintage, more expensive, etc. Using them exclusively for many months has allowed me to get the very best shaving experience from them through extended applications. They have also provided me with a satisfactory use of a minimal amount of quality shaving brushes that go hand in hand with the total lathering experience. I can conjure up a fantastic lather with a big floppy Vulfix or a velvety scrubby Simpson Chubby 2. I have no real method to my simplified soap madness. I will go on a two month tear with one of the three and then fall into a daily rotation utilizing each of them selectively. Interestingly enough, any ONE of the three could be a daily use soap for me and the thought crosses my mind when I go on such an extended tear of singular use. All 3 satisfy me in very distinct ways. Believe it or not, I get hooked on the scent and lathering capabilities of each of the three and as I use each one it reminds me how truly unique and special that they are.
Mike, I assume the GFT Rose is a new formulation? It is no longer made with tallow - is that true?

I'm currently (since mid November of 2009) working through a NOS tallow Rose puck obtaining on our BST from Ameet. Having used 2 post tallow pucks of Rose in the past I can't tell a real difference so I love it just the same. Since using the 3 soaps I mentioned, all ideas of other soaps and creams have been dashed. I pondered picking up a C&S #88 and a Knize Ten but really would that be prudent?!? I feel I have just enough variety with these three now... A cologne type, a classic rose, and a fresh laundry/ soapy lambchop.
are you talking to me?
hahhahahah
vintage (or at least out-of-production) soap has been something of an obsession for me, lately.
I do use all of the soap in my collection (with one exception so far, but I will use that for very special occasions).
I'm not very certain of ages of soap, though I believe one or two are from the 1940s or '50s or even earlier: Whisk-Off, and Fougere Royale, e.g..

Oh yea, since I found the best razor for me (who knew I could LOVE a Wapi that much?) I've stopped obsessing over them and turned over to soaps! I try to use most of them in a 1-2 weeks span depending on my mood. Oldest is a puck of William that's been sitting under the sink forever... but I do think that I found the Alpha and Omega of soaps... Irisch Moos... I do look around for better soaps, but not as much. That scent is just so refreshing.![]()
