vintage (or at least out-of-production) soap has been something of an obsession for me, lately.

I do use all of the soap in my collection (with one exception so far, but I will use that for very special occasions).

I'm not very certain of ages of soap, though I believe one or two are from the 1940s or '50s or even earlier: Whisk-Off, and Fougere Royale, e.g..

Soaps were a bit of an obsession with me, but Gentlemen's Best has pretty much stopped it for me believe it or not. I've been using it almost exclusively as of late (same with my Semogue LE '09 brush... shocking, I know).

Over 3 years into this "obsession", I have arrived at the use of 3 soaps that are in my mind classics and produced where obtaining them is easy and affordable. Mitchell's Wool Fat, Tabac, & Geo. F. Trumper Rose. For me, they satisfy in various ways and are distinctly different enough to provide some variety. I really have no desire to venture elsewhere, new, vintage, more expensive, etc. Using them exclusively for many months has allowed me to get the very best shaving experience from them through extended applications. They have also provided me with a satisfactory use of a minimal amount of quality shaving brushes that go hand in hand with the total lathering experience. I can conjure up a fantastic lather with a big floppy Vulfix or a velvety scrubby Simpson Chubby 2. I have no real method to my simplified soap madness. I will go on a two month tear with one of the three and then fall into a daily rotation utilizing each of them selectively. Interestingly enough, any ONE of the three could be a daily use soap for me and the thought crosses my mind when I go on such an extended tear of singular use. All 3 satisfy me in very distinct ways. Believe it or not, I get hooked on the scent and lathering capabilities of each of the three and as I use each one it reminds me how truly unique and special that they are.

I love shave soaps!

The oldest currently is my SCS Orange Sorbet in the stainless steel container(probably my favorite soap container also!).

Mike, I assume the GFT Rose is a new formulation? It is no longer made with tallow - is that true?

If I use all of them one by one, mmm, I don't know if I will see the end one day. I rather finish the creams first and then I will focus on the soaps. I didn't buy any shavnig cream for the past few months now!

I'm currently (since mid November of 2009) working through a NOS tallow Rose puck obtaining on our BST from Ameet. Having used 2 post tallow pucks of Rose in the past I can't tell a real difference so I love it just the same. Since using the 3 soaps I mentioned, all ideas of other soaps and creams have been dashed. I pondered picking up a C&S #88 and a Knize Ten but really would that be prudent?!? I feel I have just enough variety with these three now... A cologne type, a classic rose, and a fresh laundry/ soapy lambchop.

Mike, you're asking the wrong guy if buying a couple more soaps is prudent!
But I do like the K10 and the $88 (oops, typo) very much - I like the EdTs as well.

I've never had opportunity to try GFT tallow-based soaps, but I like the new formuations very much.

I actually thought this thread was yours when I saw it on the home page. I was like "Oh he finally posted some pics of his collection like I had suggested!"

I have like 4 old soaps.. oldest one Williams Shave soap. At shaving time I have a difficult time choosing since all of them give a good lather.

when the shaving soap is a obsession?
When I run out of bathroom space, I have not reached that yet since I am poor....

you enjoy it ?
Love trying different soaps and creams

do you use all the shaving soap in your collection?
So far I have only been able to procure Tabac, Williams, and VDH but yes I use them all still.

who is the most old soap in your collection?
My Tabac puck I purchased last February is nearly gone now. Based on age of product I have a puck of williams I got from local drugstore with a 1987 price tag on it...

I enjoy my soaps, a lot. My oldest soap would be either my Vintage Old Spice or my Yardley, I don't know which is older.
I don't use all the soaps in my collection. I have a Pen's English Fern that I am waiting to open. I have some soaps that I don't use much or that I don't enjoy as much as some of my others. I will probably put them on the BST sooner or later.

My oldest soap is also a vintage Old Spice followed by a vintage Barbershops Old Fashion, Professional Shaving Bar. I enjoy all my soaps and appreciate the differences they each bring to my shave. For example my vintage Old Spice has no fragrance left but is one of the most moisturizing soaps I use. It is one of my favorites during these cold dry days of winter.

Obsessed. Yep that's sums me over the past few months since I discovered them. I have my rotation, which takes 13 days to get through, and don't think I'll be seeing the end anytime soon.

The oldest soap I have is L'Occitane CADE which is two months old and was my first soap which started the SSAD obsession. It's really starting to ease off now...God I hope its starting to ease off... :scared:

Oh yea, since I found the best razor for me (who knew I could LOVE a Wapi that much?) I've stopped obsessing over them and turned over to soaps! I try to use most of them in a 1-2 weeks span depending on my mood. Oldest is a puck of William that's been sitting under the sink forever... but I do think that I found the Alpha and Omega of soaps... Irisch Moos... I do look around for better soaps, but not as much. That scent is just so refreshing. :001_wub:

Any advice on where to find the Irisch Moos? I can't seem to find it through any of the normal channels...

Good questions. I actually don't like too much variety with soap choices. I know that there are others that find that more is better. But for me, more is not as satisfying as using a few soaps that work absolutely excellent, and nothing less. I currently use about four soaps, down from about 15 that I previously had. The oldest soap I have is Cella, which is, I believe the oldest soap that's still around, being sold in it's original formulation (since 1899).

sorry, I didn't see the question.

I have an unused soap in the bowl - Houbigant's Fougere Royale. I'm told it is very uncommon (someone else referred to it as "the Holy Grail" of shaving soaps).

I haven't used it yet - and I don't suppose I will until my birthday or if I ever get married, or something like that.

Or maybe on some random Tuesday or something...!
