When we were young, my brothers and I wore clip-on ties (church, garden parties, ect..), and I didn't begin to learn how to knot my own ties (four-in-hand), until I joined the Army.

You forgot an option, the Pratt/Shelby knot! That one is my favorite, a slightly smaller half windsor, fits my slim frame perfectly.

I used four in hand all through high school (had to wear tie every day), but I use half windsor on pretty much everything these days except for my knit ties, which I still like the four in hand look on.

This one has saved my life a few times.....

Amen!

Learnt to tie a tie when I was about 6 for school, and have almost always worn a four in hand. Although it all really depends on the tie and the occasion. Love the shelby with thicker ties, and occasionally wear a half windsor for really formal events. I just can't pull of a full windsor.

A little ostentatious? That knot is VERY pretentious looking. I'd never wear it.

Tie it for yourself and give it a shot. If you use a solid color tie, and one that is not as shiny as pictures, the knot comes out looking very subtle. The knot pattern is not as obvious as that picture. I wore it for the first time the other night, at the restaurant that I work at a host at, and not a single person noted the knot unless they looked very carefully, which people seem to rarely too. It just looks like a very nice triangular knot from afar.
