What's new

What would you get?

I know this is so subjective, but I'm curious to see many people's reviews.

I have narrowed my want list down to just a couple of razors. And, likely I'll only get one of them.

Merkur Progress w/ Ikon knob

Merkur Futur

Edwin Jagger

I'm spending my collection money on getting started with straights. I find that I'm using only a few razors, therefore only want to get just one more out of the three.

I still wouldn't mind the Weisihi...but don't want to spend $20 on something I'll rarely use. And, I like the Parkers too. So....decisions, decisions....I do not have any adjustables, so....

I appreciate the suggestions outside of what I've mentioned. Would you mind stating why and providing a link or a photo so I can see what these look like as well as get more information on them?

I am just more interested in Vintage Gillette razors, the history, various models, and they are more affordable here on the BST or at antique shops. You're best bet for pics would be here on the wiki (safety razors, Gillette or Mr-Razor.com) Good luck!

(sorry, that's my wish list... but you can use it as your own if you like)

I think the Gillette NEW Deluxe is the finest DE available. As TTO's go I prefer the Diplomat. I'll take Vintage over copy cat any day!

Not aiming to hijack this thread, but I'm considering 2 of the razors mentioned, as well as those Vintage Gilletes suggested by others.

So my questions aim to help OP too:

What, if any advantage/differences of the EJ over a Merkur HD - just build quality or objective difference in shaves?

Why a Vintage Slim adjust over the Progress?
There appears to be issues in re-aligning the Progress after blade loading and getting your original 'pre-sets', or is this purely a matter of making sure the arrow and notch are put back on the right way round and therefore aligned?

Are Vintage really Ok used? I realise there's a lot about, and buying and selling pretty strong, but there is an ick factor.

Do you use the provided silverware when you are a dinner guest at someone else's house? They just wash that in hot soapy water. You could always use Barbicide, or Mar-V-Cide or some other similar product to disinfect a vintage razor. That would be far safer to use than silverware that isn't truly disinfected.

Yes.

Not for me there isn't. Wash it, rub it down with alcohol. It's good to go. Plenty of threads about this subject.

I'm an infectious diseases physician, so you can trust me. All my razors are vintage.

Thanks doc. I'm in healthcare too, so I'm not going to argue with that.

I was having a Seinfeld "Toothbrush" moment. :w00t:

Of the ones you have listed, I would say a Gillette Red Tip Superspeed.

Oh, wait. You didn't list that.

Nevermind.

Apart from the puzzling issues that pop up regarding Progress razor calibration and reassembly, they also have slippery handles. The Slim adjustable just plain works. You don't disassemble it. At all.
