What were the best parts about switching from cartridges to DE?

Two blemishes on my face that constantly bled with a cartridge razor have almost gone after bleeding pretty badly initially with my first weeks of DE shaving. The additional products that I'm using seem to be a big help.

My skin is now a lot healthier and I feel better about myself.

Other than that, theres not much change (apart from the additional hit to my wallet)

After finishing with the Mach3:
-Saving money (Mach3>7 shaves, Protector3>20 shaves, DE-blade> 6 to 10 shaves
-much more effectivness with P3 and DE-razor
-no more angry skin

At first I thought it was going to be saving money but SWMBO pointed out that little myth this morning. So after much thought I have concluded that the best thing about switching to a DE from a cartridge is that using a DE is more... FUN

The interesting realization that, despite reaching my fifties, I knew almost nothing about shaving. The discovery of equipment and shaving techniques which I never knew existed.

I noticed that whenever I'd shaved with a cartridge or cartridge-like disposable my stubble would clog the multiblades and I'd get a rotten shave. I knew DEs didn't, so I wanted to try a DE. You rinse a DE razor under hot water, even with Barbasol, and it is CLEAN. No clogging to interfere.

Researching wet shaving, I found that the DE blades were FAR cheaper per shave than cartidges, although I have acquired other accoutrements of the experience and can't say right now that DE is cheaper by total outlay.

Although the initial startup costs through having no DE equipment at home, I'm finding that i get many, many shaves from my mug shave soap and about 6 shaves from each good (Timor, Merkur, Derby) DE blade.

IMHO: quality of shave, blade cost are the biggies. Oh, yeah, it IS enjoyable.

I switched to achieve a better smoother shave, and to save money. I got the better shave, and though it's cheaper per shave regarding blades and initial cost, this new found Hobie is way more expensive then cartridge shaving ever was.

However, the best part about switching is the experience of shaving. It went from a tiresome chore to something I can not wait for. I truly enjoy my time shaving and it is spilling over to complete grooming body care type of thing.

I never fantasized about shaving or had dreams about shaving when using a cartridge. The ritual aspect of wetshaving is satisfying.

:001_smile. Also, wetshaving introduced me to "faceturbating"

I dont know what you guys are talking about with saving money. In the last 9 months I have spent 10 times the money I ever spent on shaving the other 18 years I have been shaved for!

That said its worth it as I actively enjoy shaving now.

I cant say I ditched Gillette as all but one of the DE's in my rotation are vintage Gillettes

I've only DE shaved a dozen times or so, but if for some reason I couldn't use straights, I'd go to DE's instead of cartridges because of clogging. DE's don't clog. If I didn't preshave with a beard trimmer after 2 days without shaving, It'd take 2-3 cartridges to finish the shave because my hair clogs cartridges to the point where I lack the ingenuity to be able to remove it. With a DE? I put it under a running faucet for half a second and the hair is gone.

Aside from the better shave, and lower over all cost, I would have to say the best part of the switch was just the act of shaving. It is sort of my equivilent of a womans long bubble bath. I know that I can shave in under 10 minutes, but on average I spend a good 30 minutes in the bathroom when I shave. Working up the perfect lather, doing all the prep work, and long deliberate strokes with the razor, makes for a very relaxing experience for me.
When I shaved with a cartrage razor I hated shaving, and would often go weeks without shaving. Now I shave everyday and it is 30 minutes of me time, and I love it.
