What type of tape to use?

Hello Guys, I have finally bought the stones and lapping paper etc. to start honing my first razor. I have watched videos and read all I can, but I have not found any information about the brand and model of the electrical tape that is preferred by the esteemed member of this forum. Please give me some options, or does any generic electrical tape do?

Doesn't really matter which tape you use. My electrical tape was dirt cheap at a DIY store and it did the job admirably. One thing to bear in mind, you buy cheap tape and it might taint the colour of the slurry/water on your stone if you use too much pressure. I would probably stay away from something too thick though as it might change the angle of the bevel too much, haven't tested myself so I'm only presuming but as they love to say here.... YMMV

Thanks guys. I wanted to make sure I buy the tape with the correct (mil) thickness to make sure I am not attempting to set too steep a bevel. Disburden, why would I want to set a double bevel?

If you must use tape I would recommend getting a name brand that is always available so you always have stock of it.

The best way to know the exact thickness of your tape is to take a piece of tape double it over[stick it to itself] use a decent micrometer or Vernier caliper and take a reading and cut that in half to know just how thick it is. beats getting sticky stuff on your micrometer face.

Just a thought.

3m electrical tape..heavy wedge grinds need 2-3 layers of tape when setting a bevel as the weight is much heavier on the spine...angle must be steeper..if hollow ground or "other"..single layer works fine..

The reason is, I know what I am using and what to get.

+1. Cheapo electrical tape leaves a lot of sticky black residue. 3m peels pretty cleanly with much less effort.
I and a few others I know of around here have used 3M Super 88 and have found it actually to be intolerably sticky and difficult to remove without using acetone for the residue. I don't like that stuff myself. Go figure....

Double bevels can add extra umpfh to the edge after finishing. You just add a layer of tape and make a few finishing strokes after you are done honing. If you google tim zowada and his method you will see this, also google unicot for coticule honing with a double bevel.

From personal experience, don't use vinyl electrical tape. The types I've picked up have an unruly adhesive that leaves behind a lot of muck on the blade. It's also very thin and floppy making it difficult to apply.

For the finest finish you have to use Jtape. Electrical tape imported from Japan.

Sure, it costs alot more, but the feeling of superiority you get while using it is worth it!

The residue left by electrical tape is easy to take off. All you need to do is use the same tape and put it where the residue is and pull it off, it will take the residue off with it.
