What's new

What SR should be my upgrade?

Well my husband got me hooked on shaving with a DE. I have a 29L as my first and I have already thought of what should be my upgrade or next SR.
I wanted to get some feed back on what others have done? What worked? What didn't? What did you like about the new SR? What did you not like?
Feel free to post pics with it if you can. I like pics=)

I really do like the long handle which makes life easier when shaving legs but for underarms I would be fine with a short handle.
Thanks everyone for looking and your feed back

Or safety razor?

For your underarms, you might want to try an injector E or G type. Short handle and very maneuverable.

Ok, here we go :) with pictures (or at least one picture!) my current line up of razors and what I like/dislike about them.

Top Row L - R

Vintage Gillette Tech 1951. I like this as it gives a very smooth shave, quite mild and forgiving, I love it's shiny golden head too. Downside is it's not very hefty with a bakelite handle.

Gillette Slim Adjustable. One of my favourites! Nice weight and feel to it, nice balance. The adjust-ability of it is great, although I usually leave it on 5, it's like having several razors in one. I can't really fault this razor :)

Edwin Jagger DE89. My first DE! oohh so shiny!! Chrome work on these EJ's is top notch, flawless. It has been touted as the ideal beginners razor and yes it is very much IMO a 'middle of the road' razor, very efficient and yet quite forgiving, has a nice balance to it. Some people complain about a slippery handle with the smooth chrome handle (like mine) so perhaps the lined handle would be better for a lady if you are using it in the shower, although I have no problems with slipperiness.

Muhle R41. or 'The Beast' as I like to call it. I can't sing the praises of this razor loud enough. It truly cuts through stubble like a laser. It has a unique comb design which is halfway open comb and halfway closed bar and the blade exposure is quite extreme. I really wouldn't want to be shaving an area that I couldn't see what I'm doing properly, so perhaps a little aggressive for ladies underarms and legs.

Schick Injector L series. A recent addition, and I must say a very easy to use razor, takes the injector blades (as seen to the right of it) very similar to using a cartridge, very, very forgiving razor I can shave very quickly with this one and it never feels like you are able to nick yourself, has a long handle which could be good for a lady and they are very cheap to purchase.

Bottom Row L-R

Ok, three straights, I know you are looking for DE's so I'll just mention what they are for those who are interested, Feather AC SS Japanese style, Kropp 5/8 in a vintage Boker box and a Dovo Classic, White scales 5/8.

Merkur Travel razor. Neat little travel razor, has a standard size 2 piece head and a 2 piece handle that screws together, plus one piece of the handle slides inside the other for travelling, all fitting into the little case next to it. A good little razor, similar to the EJ DE89 as far as performance, handle is short but workable for travel, probably would be difficult for guys with large hands, but for a lady it would be no problem I'd imagine.

Goodfella OC Razor. (in the box) Despite this being quite a pricey razor, I just can't seem to get a good shave from it and always ended up touching up with another razor, nicely engineered and great balance, it is a very small razor (about the same size as the travel razor actually) It's all been cleaned and boxed up as I'm not using it any more and it will be destined for part of a PIF package no doubt.

Hope the info is of some use, check eBay for some of the Lady Gillettes (vintage) they are beautiful pieces with nice long handles.

Right now she has a Parker 29L TTO that looks to be a copy of a lady Gillette. Very mild with a nice 4" handle. The quality isn't up to snuff compared to a Gillette but a good starter. I have an EJ DE89BA11, a Merkur 39C slant and 15C OC as far as new razors go. I don't have a Merkur closed comb for her to try and am not sure if they compare to any of the razors I have. As far as vintage, I have a 1920's old type post patent, a 1945 contract tech, and a 1970 super adjustable. I know she is gonna want a new razor though, and Merkur seems to offer the most in a long handle design, so kinda bummed I don't have one for her to try out.

Here is a photo comparison of the Merkur travel razor and an EJ DE89, in both pics the EJ DE89 is on the left. To me it is a very similar style of head and the blade exposure and angle is quite similar when loaded.

Looks pretty close to me, Thanx! Wish EJ made as many handle options as Merkur, the finish on their razors is amazing compared to the Merkur.
