What's new

What razor to buy?

I want to go to a double edge safety razor. I don't like the Fusions, etc. too expensive and they suck! What would be a good, reasonably price razor to start with. I am used to the old Fat Boy Gillette adjustables from 40 years ago. The used and NIB Gillette razors on eBay are pricey.

Any suggestions?

Grab one of the Schick Injectors from 40 years ago (actually) -- they haven't escalated in price as much as the 195 Adjustable has in the 49 years since those were last produced. Then start using traditional soaps, brushes, creams, etc, and work your way more slowly back to DEs. The Slim Adjustable and Super Adjustable both shave very much the same way as the original adjustable did, and are both less expensive, and were more numerous, so auction prices will be less volatile for those.

When you want to buy new (non-adjustable) the Lord LP1822 aka L6 is a good and cheap way to start (just over $10). The Edwin Jagger 89-series get a lot of love too and they can be had for under $40. If you want a new adjustable DE the Merkur Progress is probably the cheapest for around $60. There is lots more to choose from so good luck in yor search!

I would look for Gillette used vintages that are cheap or a modern razor. A vintage Gillette NIB is usually a collectors piece...

I have an EJ DE89 and love it. Thought about the Merkur Progress, but wanted to save some cash. Either would no doubt give you great shaves. Enjoy!

I'd say you are best to start with an adjustable as it can give you a number of options in just one razor. I recommend the Merkur Progress. It is a fantastic razor.

You could try looking around antique malls and second hand stores. I found my Gillette Red Tip at an antique mall and think I paid around $10.00 for it. Been using it for years and years. Recently bought a Merkur HD 34c and it is an excellent razor. I you want an adjustable, the Merkur Progress seems to be very popular.

If you look around you can get a vintage razor pretty cheap. I recently picked up a nice condition Fatboy for $3.00 and a Slim for $4.00. Try flee markets or thrift stores. Some antique stores can have good deals as well.

A vintage gillette can be bought on the bay, some can be had for cheap especially if your willing to do some cleaning.

I recommend the Merkur progress. I went through 20+ modern razors a lot of really expensive ones and I have finally settled on the progress. It is now the only safety razor I own
