What's new

what is your price limit when buying colognes?

This is totally the wrong question for me. Lately, I've succumbed to OAD (Oud Acquisition Disorder). You guys do the math. It's ridiculous, but I'm hooked. :blushing:

I know what you mean mate.

A kind soul (Yes that's what I will call him for his generosity) has sent me the tiniest sample of Agaraura's Borneo Jewel and I am dreading testing it :tongue_sm

My math is good and that's the very reason I am resisting.

You'll love it. Taha has quality stuff. :thumbup1:

Beware. :tongue_sm

Over the Winter I popped my $100 cherry on some Serge Lutens Filles en Anguilles and Borneo 1834. Well, $150 cherry, technically. I prefer to keep it under $100 but M Micallef and Heeley are beating me down.

Oudh is a slippery slope, for sure.

Re oud: don't even get me started.

Re Lutens' FeA: the pine note in that stuff is absolutely amazing. I can't wait to break it out around the holidays -- it's perfect for that time of year! :thumbup1:

The niche stuff is great, but pricey fo sho.

I don't know what oud is, and I have no intention of finding out. :scared:

Someone else will have to help you with the math; I don't know how to divide by infinity. :001_rolle

The most I've paid for a cologne so far is seventy five dollars for four ounces. I don't see myself spending more than that.

I understand that...I haven't succumbed to OAD yet, but Attar Acquisition Disorder isn't cheap. Per ml, the price is nuts. But so very worth it.

Evan is right, the oud-diction has every potential of quickly becoming a ridiculously expensive hobby with most of the good stuff selling in the $150-$400 per 1ML price range. Good thing that even tiny amounts of these oils last forever.

A person who liked one cologne only could spend $300 on a bottle and be better off than someone with an $80 limit who had 10 bottles!

If you like the expensive stuff, narrow it down to one or two. Unless you are loaded, of course.

For many of us, the hunter-gatherer instinct takes over, and limits must be set.

Since I went through an "cologne stage" during my college years, I think I am better off in handling the AD problem today. So far....

Amen. That's the saving grace, isn't it. Although lately I've found some oils roughly in the $80-85/ml price range that smell pretty great.

...and therein lies the sickness. When you consider $80-85/ml to be a good price...ai yi yi... :001_huh:

Apparently I do not have a limit when it comes to decants, anyway. I seem to have tumbled down into getting decants of vintage versions of scents lately, heaven help me! And I may succumb to aoud AD yet, which is terrifying. Also, "special bottlings" Creed (Windsor) and SL (EDIT: Santal de Mysore). Shoot me now!

I do not buy many full bottles. I can see paying $200 plus if it were something I had to have, but at this point I would try to do it as a split, unless it was so rare and so good I needed a lifetime supply! Not sure I have found that one yet. But the right vintage Mysore sandalwood might be one!

Turn away, turn back! Ye who are not yet fully addicted yet! "Here be dragons!"

What gets you is the hunt. The anticipation of something better around the corner.

The harder you have to hunt for it, the more you want to gather it.

If it smells good, then you get the postive feedback, and you are back to the races again. :biggrin1:

Everyone has their own tastes and limits; I have 10 bottles on my dresser right now, I average $125 for a 3.4 oz bottle...
