I'm no expert, but check out the naturalwhetstones web page and go to the JNat section where it is explained well.

Yae Botan may be more abrasive than regular Botan.
But Yae might also not be more abrasive. Evaluate each piece on it's own merits.
Geologically, Yae B is a different layer Botan. Still, it shares the moniker, and it's known for producing stone, similar to Botan, but less consistent and often more abrasive. There is more sand next to the YB seam but Botan is not immune from that sand issue. It is very possible to have a piece of Yae that is less coarse than a piece of regular Botan.

Then there is speed to consider... a harder abrasive that is finer might be faster but not coarser. A less consistent Nagura, Mushi, for example, isn't so much 'just coarser' as it is less refined and usually in-consistent.
In a general sense, the Nagura can be viewed in a simplified coarse-to-fine graph but the real picture is much deeper than that.

Helping to confuse the storyline, there is a ton of fake Yae on the market. Not even sure it's even Botan.

Any recommendation where can I get a true and good Botan?
