What is the difference between an open tooth and a regular razor?

if you go for longer periods without shaving, the open comb is also great for mowing down even several weeks growth with the right blade. safety bars can't even compare.

I read somewhere that the combs were mainly to make the shave more comfortable and effective for those who, in those days, shaved infrequently. The comb helped to guide and position the longer whiskers so that the blade could mow them down more effectively without clogging like razors with safety bars tended to do.

As others have said, open comb razors allow for lengthy beard growth to be cut easier. In theory, the teeth permit extra lather to enter the cutting area to lubricate. The closed comb or safety bar provides you protection against nicks by keeping the skin tight using the bar. This gives you a smoother, flatter surface for shaving.

However, in practice there isn't much applied difference in terms of lubrication, regardless of the type of comb (at least in my personal experience). My 39C slant does not have an open comb but does have teeth, which permits the lather to enter the cutting area.

The bottom line, if you have extremely tough, thick, fast-growing beard then you would benefit from an open comb razor.

I've grown a beard and shaved it off twice since starting with DEs. My NEW truly did mow through the whole thing like it wasn't even there. Would have bogged down and choked an adjustable on 9 in nothing flat - I know because I'd tried that first. Every guy should have 1 open comb in the arsenal, just in case.

A Futur on 6 can also perform what an open comb can do for a lot of beard growth. Any straight bar razor with a big enough blade gap can.

My experience this morning with a NEW on three days growth was just what has been described here...like a hot knife through butter and just as slick. Everyone should give these a try.

oh ok. I'm buying this one:

Merkur 12C HD Long Handle Barber Pole Safety Razor, Open Tooth
This is the open comb version of the Merkur Long Handle Barber Pole Safety Razor, a chrome finished 2-piece double edge razor. The comfortable handle is approximately 3.75" long and is designed with a non-slip grip. Longer and heavier than the HD, it weighs over 4 oz. This razor uses double edge blades for a close and comfortable shave. Replacement blades are available.

Good choice. I was able to shave off 4 days of beard growth with that razor.
