Hello folks. I was in my local Rite Aid today and I saw an item from One Planet called shave oil. What is what? What do you do with it? It is a preshave prep or do you shave with it in place of a soap/cream?
Pre-shave prep, some people shave with shave oil in place of soap/cream but I wouldn't. Anyway, I think I might give this stuff a try sometime soon. http://pacificshaving.com/
I tried Shave Secret like they say, without soap and it wasn't very good. Started using it as a pre-shave oil and then soap and it works great.
Hot towel, shave secret, MWF soap, and shave. It seems to work better for me than just the hot towel and MWF. Closer shave without the irritation of a close shave.
Shaving Oil that is used as a pre-shave is totally a waste of money in my opinion.
It serves no purpose, as long as your prep before the shave is adequate (a hot shower, or Kyle's Prep). It also tends to gunk up your razor, and brush.
Not to mention, these oil mixes tend to be really expensive. If one truly finds that it makes a difference, you can mix your own from Olive oil, Castor oil, and some sort of Fragrance Oil/ Essential Oil for scent.
I saw a shave oil today at Rite Aid from a co. called One Planet and I was curious. I see there are pre-shave oil and shaving oils. I would think the oil would have to be pretty slick to shave with, and why would it not just soak in your skin if you use such a very small amount? Newbie trying to learn.
I used Art of Shaving today, and while it worked at what I needed it to do... that stuff is thick... and yes it did gunk up the razor, however feathers are just too thin and irritating for me, but with shave oil, it was decent. Anyway, you don't really need it, it just makes it a little smoother.
When I was shaving by using the canned goo, and disposable razors, I used a shave oil by first putting it on to set up the whiskers. Then I'd wipe on whatever canned goo I was using. It didn't seem to work very well though, and I think even set me up for nicks and cuts from the disposable. Not long after I started to use the oil I stopped it.
Now that I use a DE I find that there is no need what so ever for a shave oil.
A lot of guys swear by pre-shave oil. It is easy to make. 3 parts castor oil to 1 part EVOO with a few drops of the essential oil of your choice. You can make a batch pretty cheaply (especially if you leave out the essential oil). I run hot and cold on using oil under my soap. I have pretty sensitive skin and a heavy beard. When my skin gets overly sensitive I will use the oil for a few days. I have always felt that it helps. That said, YMMV.
I tend to not bother with pre-shave oil and was one of those guys with super sensitive skin. If you face lather it should be more than plenty to soften your beard and prepare the beard after a shower.
