What do the numbers/letters mean?

Sorry if this comes across like a newbie question but I couldnt find anything in the sticky or FAQ section.

What do the numbers/letters after the name of a razor mean? i.e. Merkur HD 34C, what does the 34C stand for?

I'd imagine it's a guide in relation to weight or handle length but could someone cleare it up for me?

Many thanks.

For the Merkur line, it's a model designation. There's no real rhyme or reason to the number progression, you just have to look them up. The letter at the end refers to the metal finish. C refers to chrome plating, G to gold colored finish, M to matte, B to blue matte and R to red matte.

The 34 is the HD model which seems the most beloved in this crowd. There's a long handled version called the 38, also nicknamed the barber pole. There's a slant head version of the 34 called the 37 and a slant head version of the 38 called the 39. There are several other models though, these are the heavyweights.

Do not forget the 23C, or the original long handled version of the 34...to me the best of all.

All they are is model numbers. I don't really keep track of the model number, and just quote a razor by its name. Be sure to check out the Merkur 1904. Thats one sweet razor, and after trying most of them its my go to razor now. Shaves me better than any of the others.   :thumbup1::ihih::yesnod::a21:
