What's new

What did I get? Good find?

Some info:

JOSEPH ALLEN & SONS
Oak Works, Sheffield, England
ca. 1864-1925

IMO, you got a pretty good deal on that.

Looks like a nice blade for money paid...Sheffield razors are generally easy to hone and very smooth to shave with. Looking closely at the pix, it appears to need only a light clean up (Flitz or Maas) and will certainly need to been honed...Nice find!:thumbup1:

Very nice score!! :thumbup1:

A little more cleanup, a good honing, and a wonderful shave awaits! Nice!!

(Can't beat the price!)

Well I recieved the razor today, may I say that it is in really good contition for the price I paid for it. Tiny bit of pitting on the tang, some tarnish on the blade but other than that, no major flaws. Exciting. Now it needs to be honed and stroped. :(

From your description it sounds like you got a great deal. If you know how to hone, get to it and we like pictures :001_smile

I don't actually. I have a tri-hone for knives but I doubt I can use it for my razor. I HOPE I can because I don't want to buy anything else for a while. If somebody can enlighten me I'd appreciate it. It the old three piece set with the rough, medium, and fine grit hone on a block of triangle wood. I have all the latigo in the world so I can strop at least!!!

Send it out to a professional honer... straights are different than razors as they require finer hones to finish the edge. It'll cost $20 plus shipping at the most, and you can work on your shaving technique knowing the blade is sharp, which eliminates one important variable. You already have a strop, so you'd be good to go for 6 months to a year!
